The biggest fear I had when starting my business was the concept of hiring people. I knew I had no money to be able to pay them. I didn’t even know what I was doing, so how would I tell whether they were doing a good job? And where do I find people who aren’t just going to steal my money, do a bad job and leave me to pick up the pieces? And the reality is I have wasted and lost an enormous amount of money on hiring. But it has also been the number one thing which has consistently grown the business and now, I wouldn’t do it any other way. The way I got over those fears was to just dive into it. My first ever higher was from Fiverr, where I asked someone to help with a little bit of logo design and uploading a few coaching call recordings. I knew it would only cost me a maximum amount because I pre-set a limit on how much I was willing to spend. And frankly, I did probably overspend on this, and because I didn’t have much of a process the result was very clunky, but it did show me that someone else could do the work for me. One massive mistake I made was hiring people without really interviewing and vetting them first. I actually think one of the reasons we are worried about hiring people who will take all of our money and do a bad job (and perhaps even scam ask), is because we're also afraid to dig into and interrogate and interview them to the point where it might almost seem rude. I’m not saying you should be rude (far from it) but you do need to have a rigourous interview and vetting process. Something I’ve learned is that you are better off hiring one rockstar player than five mediocre team members. And slowly slowly the clear I became what my job was, the clearer I became on their jobs. It didn’t start with full-time members of staff, it started with virtual assistants and gig workers doing the odd hour every few days or every few weeks, some frequently recurring tasks. And the more I specialised into a niche and focused in on having fewer products and services, the more standardised our processes became. But the reality is you are going to make mistakes, you are going to lose money and you are going to waste your time. That’s just the nature of running a business. But eventually, you’ll find people who do such a good job you’ll do anything to keep them. And if you set up the business in a way that makes it enjoyable to work with you, they won’t ever want to leave either. Have you made your first hire yet? What was your first hiring experience like?
