Like these businesses What’s the secret do you think to a business owner who seriously knows what they’re doing? If you’re anything like me, I sometimes see business owners who just GET it. And others who seem to just go round in circles. I made a list of all the things I found impressive about the business owners who I admired and ONE thing stuck out over and over. Something they all had in common. But to understand that one common awesome trait, we have to understand what turns someone from an amateur runner into a dedicated professional. Hint: it’s not talent. A few weeks ago I ran a half marathon with my wife, who LOVES to run (I know - ugh). And as we set off, we have very different approaches. While she’ll say she’s taking it easy, nice and casual “just going for a plod”... What she’s really doing is following a very specific plan. Whereas I kind of just…run. I basically put my headphones on, play an audiobook and keep running until they tell me to turn around. And what’s really spooky about my wife is that she can predict her finish time down to the minute. How? Because she has recorded every run she’s ever done. Ever. Total time, average pace, elevation, race type, temperature. And she has a very good idea of her split times, based on those numbers above. I am absolutely floored by the time I finish a race. I lie down and ask myself if there aren’t easier ways to punish myself. Olivia crosses the line and can chat afterwards, all smiles. Whereas I will vocally tell people to get away from me (because I’m vomiting). Yes, training almost certainly plays a role. But the real difference is that you can ask Olivia what her best time is. Or her average time. Or her slowest, or time uphill or time on trial. And she’ll know it. Because she knows her numbers. Olivia is a master runner, because she knows her cadence, pacing, split times, water break times - all of that. The business owners I admire and look up to. The ones who seem to get it. The masters? They all know their numbers. Do you know your numbers in the area you’d like to be a master in? Have courage, commit and take action. P.S.
