You’re going to fail ?You really really should think about getting experience first Mike. You

You’re going to fail “You really really should think about getting experience first Mike. You’ve never run a business before. I’d feel much more comfortable if you worked for an agency first…” These were the words of my boss, Zoe. Who by the way gave me my first real corporate marketing job. Paradoxically, I was being fired/let go for not really being very good at corporate marketing. But I really admired Zoe and looked up to her. And frankly, she was right. I didn’t have any experience. I didn’t know how to run a business. I’d never even been close to an agency before. But Zoe was just looking out for me. Her words weren’t meant to be harsh or hurtful. She just wanted what was best for me. And I’ll always respect that. But this was the first lesson I learned. It’s pretty much my first memory. Life is filled with people who will tell you not to go after things. Because they wouldn’t go after things. And the truth is that those people are often closest to you, who love you the most. They just don’t want you to get hurt. Which is fine. But misguided. My Mum would be perfectly happy with me taking a nice easy simple job with no stress. And in fact, I did have LOTS of people tell me I’d fail. Some friends, some not so friendly. And again, they’re right. I’ve failed so many times. Over and over and over. And it’s great. I’ve failed to a pretty good place. I fail harder every day, harder than most people who “gave me advice”. And I thank them for their words because it was like a warning sign telling you to stay out of a cave filled with treasure. What’s your earliest entrepreneurial memory? P.S.
