4 tips to help you keep sane with people who always âknow bestâ
An old tale has it that a man went to have a lion tattooed onto his back. âOuch!â he screamed to the tattooist. âWhat are you doing?â
âIâm drawing the lionâs mane,â replied the tattooist.
âWe donât need a mane on this lion!â
A little later the man shouted again and on being told that now the tail was being drawn onto his back, ordered that âa lion doesnât need a tail!â This continued until, of course, the frustrated tattooist ordered the opinionated man out of his shop.
You may not have the option of ordering the know-it-all in your life âout of the shopâ. Maybe you work or even live with them. But there are things you can do to better deal with the âexpertâ on everything; if thereâs a subject, they have an opinion on it â and itâs better than yours. Or thatâs what they like to think. So what can you do?
Tip 1 â Donât take it personally
Know-it-alls can put others down by implication. After all, if they are constantly âputting you rightâ and they know âeverythingâ then, by implication, you know nothing. Being around people like this can flatten your self-esteem.
But know-it-alls canât help themselves and chances are they like to put everyone straight. They feel they are doing you a favour (and sometimes they might be) by telling you how âit isâ. So keep calm and, like water off a duckâs back, donât take it as a personal affront. Itâs not that they think you are stupid; itâs just that they donât think much about you at all. They havenât yet learned the difference between opinion and fact.

*** ARTICLE: Comfortably Numb? Wake up! Five Reasons to Feel Happy When Youâre Sad - by Lori Snyder ***
------------------------------------------------------------
We all have times in our lives when we are feeling sad or down about something for one reason or another. One may walk around feeling totally drained, numb and basically not in tune with the best life has to offer. This feeling can zap your energy, sabotage your joy and basically make you feel like a walking, stressed out mummy.
So what can one do when they are at a moment in their life where they are starving their soul of living life to the fullest, and of being happy and content in their own skin?
For starters they can become aware of that feeling, wake-up, create courage within, and begin taking the steps towards being pro-active in establishing their best life.
Here are some steps to take to turn your sad feeling into a happy one.
Step one: Feel happy that you are aware of your sad feeling. This means you are alive, deep down you really do not want to stay the walking mummy you may now feel like, it is not who you really are.
Now that you want to change something you are not happy about, you can begin taking the steps to do so. Know that this is an inside job it is your choice and no one elseâs. So feel happy that you can get going with this task right now, no need to wait for any one thing, it is all inside you.

*** BOOK REVIEW: Smarter Faster Better: The Secrets of Being Productive in Life and Business - by Charles Duhigg ***
------------------------------------------------------------
At the core of Smarter Faster Better are eight key productivity conceptsâfrom motivation and goal setting to focus and decision makingâthat explain why some people and companies get so much done. Drawing on the latest findings in neuroscience, psychology, and behavioral economicsâas well as the experiences of CEOs, educational reformers, four-star generals, FBI agents, airplane pilots, and Broadway songwritersâthis painstakingly researched book explains that the most productive people, companies, and organizations donât merely act differently.
They view the world, and their choices, in profoundly different ways.
A young woman drops out of a PhD program and starts playing poker. By training herself to envision contradictory futures, she learns to anticipate her opponentsâ misstepsâand becomes one of the most successful players in the world.
A group of data scientists at Google embark on a four-year study of how the best teams function, and find that how a group interacts is more important than who is in the groupâa principle, it turns out, that also helps explain why Saturday Night Live became a hit.
A Marine Corps general, faced with low morale among recruits, reimagines boot campâand discovers that instilling a âbias toward actionâ can turn even the most directionless teenagers into self-motivating achievers.
The filmmakers behind Disneyâs Frozen are nearly out of time and on the brink of catastropheâuntil they shake up their team in just the right way, spurring a creative breakthrough that leads to one of the highest-grossing movies of all time.
What do these people have in common?
They know that productivity relies on making certain choices. The way we frame our daily decisions; the big ambitions we embrace and the easy goals we ignore; the cultures we establish as leaders to drive innovation; the way we interact with data: These are the things that separate the merely busy from the genuinely productive.
In The Power of Habit, Pulitzer Prizeâwinning journalist Charles Duhigg explained why we do what we do. In Smarter Faster Better, he applies the same relentless curiosity, deep reporting, and rich storytelling to explain how we can improve at the things we do. Itâs a groundbreaking exploration of the science of productivity, one that can help anyone learn to succeed with less stress and struggle, and to get more done without sacrificing what we care about mostâto become smarter, faster, and better at everything we do.
