Hello {First Name},
“You shouldn’t even be alive. Earn. This. Life.”
These are the words I repeated to myself as I battled excruciating pain on day 3 of my 167 mile run across Liberia.
My mission was to run just under a marathon a day for 1 week to raise funds to build the 1st sustainable school in postwar Liberia and to bring clean water to those that need it.
About 18 miles into Day 3’s run, I almost collapsed when severe pain struck me in my right shin. I massaged my legs. It didn’t work. I put some cream on it. Nothing. I tried to walk it off. Yet, the misery persisted.
I limped along, forced to face not just the physical torment, but the psychological agony as well. I still had 4 more days of running to go. If this continued, it would be a very, very long and very, very painful ordeal.
Then, after about a mile or so, I started jogging slowly just to see what would happen.
Soon after that, something dark took over me. I was no longer myself. I stopped fighting the pain, I was one with it. I stopped wrestling my demons. I became those demons. Or perhaps more accurately, those demons became me.
“You should have died in the war, earn this.”
“If you quit now, you deserve a cowards death.”
“People are dying all over the world. This life is not yours to waste. Suck it up. Fight for it. Earn it. Live it.”
These are the words I repeated to myself over and over again.
By the end of that day’s run, I hit 25 miles. Those last 5 miles were the fastest miles I ran in the entire journey.
What is going to make 2019 any different for you?
This time of year, you are going to see A LOT of information on setting goals and New Years Resolutions. I am sure you are already being bombarded by many emails as you read this one.
The problem is most of them are feel-good, fluffy nonsense that will not transform the next year of your life. Here’s why:
At some point in the next year, regardless of what you are trying to achieve, you will hit a low moment. You will struggle.

But first, it’s essential to point out, this is why creating long-lasting, sustainable behavior change is so hard. And however you look at it, true success and fulfillment in every area of life is extremely rare.
But don’t worry {First Name}. There is hope.

He was demonizing fear and anxiety and helping the audience get rid of these “negative” emotions. He even said if you’re in a place of fear, you’re going to act differently than if you’re in a place of courage.
That is HIGHLY destructive information.
You can’t have courage without fear. They are not two separate things. Courage exists only in the presence of fear.
And there is nothing wrong with fear in the first place.
The single greatest problem that stands in the way of our collective success and happiness is our negative relationship to fear, and ultimately any kind of struggle, no matter how it shows up.
I once worked with a client who told me “I’m just waiting for the fear to go away so I can quit my job and start my business.”
I told him “that’s your problem, you’re waiting for the fear to go away.”
It’s normal to be scared of quitting a job.
The problem is never fear, stress or anxiety. It’s the fear of fear, stressing out over stress and getting anxious about anxiety that causes you real problems.
This client believed he should not feel fear because so many “experts” had told him to be fearless, to get rid of his anxiety, to reduces stress, or to eliminate self-doubt.
Despite what most people tell you, if you want to make 2019 the best year of your life, your goal is not to eliminate your so-called “negative” emotions or get rid of the darkness, it’s to embrace it.
Besides, it’s useless to even try to destroy these emotions, because you will feel them at some point. They are a normal part of the human experience.
When you fall in love with them, all parts of you will come into full alignment. Then you will become stronger than you have ever imagined.
The path to success and happiness is not what your environment would have you believe, which is why they are both extremely rare. The truth is, it is a highly counterintuitive journey to find true success and long-term happiness.

On some of these goal setting emails I was telling you about earlier, I saw one “expert” saying your goals should make you feel good every day. Someone else talked about a lack of motivation being the problem for why people don’t hit their goals.
Setting goals that “focus on how you feel” is a recipe for disaster.
If you let your feelings or motivation guide you, you are doomed to fail. 2019 will be no better than this year.
What feels good now will not make you great tomorrow.
But when you master [the one thing]( that greatness demands, you will feel good forever, even when your mind, body and spirit are reeling in pain.
That might not make sense right now, but I assure you, there is bliss available to you even in pain.
Happiness my friend, is not the elimination of sadness, it is the ability to find the gift in it.
Motivation, like your feelings are fleeting. They vary from moment to moment. Who you are, the person you want to be, that is something beyond your feelings. It is greater than temporary motivation. When your greater self is so aligned with the mission, your demons, and your divinity start to work for you.
Yes, even your demons will become your allies, guiding you on your path without you even knowing it, just like they did for me on my run across Liberia. At that point, it won’t matter whether you feel good or whether you are motivated to take action, you will do it anyway.

Any feeling, including fear, stress, anxiety, or guilt, can be turned into your greatest ally toward the accomplishment of your goals.
It took me a long time and a lot of suffering to figure this all out.
From the brink of suicide to the gift of Fearvana
I have battled drug addiction, PTSD from fighting the war in Iraq with the US Marines, depression and alcoholism that pushed me to the brink of suicide. When I hit that low moment, I began years of research in neuroscience, psychology, spirituality and peak performance.
Through that journey I learned to find the beauty in my pain. I learned to use my survivors guilt as my ally.
See I lost a friend in the war and always felt like it should have been me that died instead of him.
Today, I have his picture up on my wall. It says “this should have been you, earn this life.” My guilt has become a driving force for good and has led me to tremendous success in every area of my life.
I am humbled and blessed to say that I am now a sponsored athlete and ultrarunner, despite 4 biological defects that do not make me ideally suited to be a runner, including a blood condition that 2 doctors told me would kill me in Marine Corps Boot Camp.
I have also built a global business that allows me to work from where I want, when I want, explored the most hostile and awe-inspiring environments on the planet, and written a book called Fearvana, which was endorsed by the Dalai Lama who said “Fearvana inspires us to look beyond our own agonizing experiences and find the positive side of our lives.”

Ultimately I finished my run and my nonprofit, The Fearvana Foundation, raised over 10,000 dollars as a result.
But the thing is, I knew I would finish the run before I even set foot in Liberia.
It wasn’t that I was confident in my abilities as a runner. I had never run that kind of mileage in a week before. I was also entering a new country that had struggled through the Ebola virus, a brutal civil war, and is one of the poorest countries in the world. There were a lot of unknowns.
I was terrified.
Yet, I knew that unless I died or encountered a life threatening injury, I would reach the shores of Monrovia 167 miles later. The only thing I didn’t know was how much suffering it would take to get there.
I wasn’t confident about the goal itself, but I was confident in my ability to endure whatever amount of suffering was required to accomplish that goal.
When you develop a positive relationship to any kind of suffering, nothing will ever stop you again {First Name}.
Whether life punches you in the face, which as you probably know, it does from time to time, or whether you are reaching for the stars with audacious goals that stretch you beyond your limits, you will have an iron-like will to rise above every obstacle standing in your way.
