I was very into the idea that I had anything in common with Bey, even just living on the same planet that takes a certain amount of time to orbit the sun. I was also drawn to the quote's obvious motivational intention. With Beyoncé out in the world doing... gestures broadly at everything, I could knock a few items off my to-do list, right? Eh. Turns out that kind of motivation only worked on me for about five minutes. Productivity is obviously different for everyone. But if you're anything like me, this kind of external motivation doesn't really light a long-lasting productive fire, especially since I can't exactly say my life circumstances are the same as Beyoncé's. She doesn't need to spend hours figuring out her taxes or cooking for herself or walking from place to place because ride shares are expensive and public transportation isn't always reliable. (Still love her, though.) What has helped me so much more is honing in on the internal feelings that motivate me, like the wave of accomplishment that washes over me when I'm done editing a tough story or the prospect of being able to fully relax without the nagging thought that I should fold my laundry. And instead of comparing myself to people with totally different lives, I like learning productivity tips and tricks from people I can relate to, then experimenting with what does and doesn't work for me.
