My chat with the oracle. [Logo]( Weekly Market Update Today is August 11, 2023 Dear Reader, Hello again and Happy Friday! The “dog days” of summer apparently come to an end… today. At least if you believe ChatGPT, the “Oracle of OpenAI” (OpenAI makes ChatGPT). Bill Spencer Editor-In-Chief True Market Insiders Interesting… But wait… Should we even call ChatGPT “The Oracle of OpenAI.” Let’s ask it. “While "the Oracle of OpenAI" might be a poetic or metaphorical way to describe the capabilities of the AI model like me, it's important to note that I'm not an oracle in the traditional sense.” “An oracle typically implies a source of divine knowledge or foresight, whereas I rely on the data and patterns I've learned from, and I don't have the ability to predict the future or possess any inherent consciousness or wisdom.” Wow! It’s not often you see honesty and humility like that. But perhaps ChatGPT is being too modest. Maybe it has more limited clairvoyant abilities? “I don't have the ability to predict future stock market movements.” Hmmmm… “No one can consistently and accurately predict the stock market's movements with certainty.” “Many studies have shown that even professional financial analysts often struggle to consistently outperform the market over the long term.” I think I’m starting to like this ChatGPT guy!     You see, we’ve been telling folks since, well since forever, that trying to “predict” the direction of the stock market, or the direction of any particular stock, is a fool’s errand. If I think I can predict the market, I must also think: - That my view of the world, and not the views of a million other market players, is the correct one… - That, given time, those other guys will come around to my (correct) way of thinking… - And that, once those multitudes (finally!) come over from the dark side, they’ll all take the actions I need them to take to make my trade or investment profitable. That feels like a stretch, to say the least. But let’s check… “There is no one "correct" view of the stock market that applies universally and without exception.” “It's important to approach the stock market with humility and an understanding that no one has a crystal ball.” Now I want to hire this guy! I like the way “he” thinks. And I recommend you take his words to heart! Thanks as always for your time and attention. Stay cool, stay safe, don’t try to predict the market. And I’ll see you next Friday.
