Plus, block Bard with Google-Extended, SGE adds About this result, exact match vs. broad match performance, ad fraud and more. [View in browser]() | [Share]() Sep 29, 2023 [Search Engine Land]() Good morning, Search Marketer, it’s over. Google’s [September 2023 helpful content update finished rolling out]() yesterday after 14 days. This seemed to be one of the more memorable updates – and especially tough on what we’re now calling “niche” websites. But, as pointed out by [Bryan Casey on X](), “niche” seems to be code for “site run by an seo where all monetization is via ads and affiliates.” And as Google’s Gary Illyes said last week in an [AMA](), these sites often don’t fall into a category Google is looking to promote. Now, this isn’t meant to make light of anyone who was negatively impacted by the helpful content update. Being on the losing end of any algorithm update is never fun. But as Barry Schwartz put it to me the other day, “SEOs need to think from the searcher’s perspective. Or they won’t win.“ Speaking of Barry, he will do his typical deep dive into this update in the coming days. And if you were impacted, good luck with your recovery efforts.
