August 11, 2020 [View email online]( [News]( [Sport]( [Arts and Culture]( [Facebook]( [Twitter]( [The Scotsman] Aug 11, 2020 Good evening, Scotland's Education Secretary, John Swinney, has announced that young people who had their exam grades moderated downwards will have them withdrawn, and pupils will have their results based on teachers estimates. [Apologising for the exams fiasco](, Mr Swinney said he understood the anger and “anguish” caused by the moderation system employed by the Scottish Qualifications Authority, which saw some 124,000 grades marked down. He said the system had set out to be “fair and credible” but that “we did did not get it right for every young person and I want to apologise for that”. He added that an “apology was not enough" and as a result “all downgraded exam grades will be withdrawn."
