Happy New Year! We hope you’re off to a good start to 2021.One person who’s not is local media tycoon Jimmy Lai. The city’s highest court last week sent the Apple Daily founder and outspoken Beijing critic back behind bars, allowing prosecutors to appeal against his release on HK$10 million bail pending trial on charges of fraud and violating the national security law.The case of the 12 Hong Kong fugitives, captured at sea and detained by mainland authorities while trying to flee to Taiwan, is still making headlines as the political fallout continues. Ten of them were tried in neighbouring Shenzhen and sentenced to between seven months and three years in prison; the remaining two, who are underage, have been handed back to Hong Kong but their court appearance has been delayed as they spend two weeks in quarantine first. We’ve also been looking back at the past six months of life under the national security law, as well as the state of the protest movement these days, among other news. It’s a new year, but the old problems are not going away any time soon!Yonden Lhatoo,Chief News Editor - South China Morning Post, SCMP - Happy New Year!
