Find out what game-winning quarterbacks and successful options traders have in common -- and how you can avoid costly rookie mistakes with this exclusive offer. [Schaeffer's Logo]( Dear Trader, Picture it: Your favorite football franchise is playing in the big game. There's less than a minute to go in the fourth quarter, with your team on offense -- and down by six points. It's fourth down and 10 as the final seconds wind down on the play clock. The center executes the snap right on cue. The quarterback confidently grabs the football, scans the field, and... hands it off to the fullback, who stutters to a two-yard gain before succumbing to a pile-on by the defensive line. Just like that, the season is over. Football fans know it's Game Management 101: Never run the ball when you need a deep pass to keep the chains moving. It's the kind of crucial strategy miscue that can make the difference between a win and a loss. And not just on the football field, but in your trading account, too. Learn more below, then put your newfound knowledge to the test with an incredible trial offer, only for new Schaeffer's members! [The Difference Between an L and a W? The Right Strategy, Of Course.]( The same principle applies when you're trading options. To maximize your profits and make the most out of your investments, always make sure you're using [the right strategy for the situation.]( Buying stocks is a fairly straightforward proposition, on paper -- buy shares, hold until desired gain is achieved, rinse, repeat. But with options, you can choose from a (seemingly endless!) variety of different strike prices and expiration dates, all of which carry a slightly different upfront premium... and thus, a slightly different risk/reward scenario. And there's no "cheat code" here, either. It might seem like a no-brainer to pick up the cheapest possible call option if you're betting on a stock to rally -- but don't make the mistake of thinking you've outsmarted the options pricing model. Chances are good that if an option is priced low, it's because it's deep out of the money, and possibly with very little time to expiration. In other words, it's only a "no-brainer" if you're extremely confident the underlying stock will make a massive move higher in a very short amount of time. Conversely, deep in-the-money options are priced higher because they have more intrinsic value, and move more closely in step (on a point-for-point basis) with the underlying stock. They're less likely to expire worthless than their out-of-the-money counterparts -- but once again, there's no such thing as a no-brainer here. You'll have to dedicate more capital to the trade upfront, and sacrifice some leverage compared to a trader who bought an at-the-money or in-the-money option. Ultimately, the strike price and expiration date you select should stem from a thorough, objective analysis of the underlying stock's price action and sentiment backdrop. This due diligence should allow you to determine a reasonable price target for the stock to achieve, as well as a likely time frame for that move to play out. (And of course, don't forget to account for your own risk tolerance!) No matter what kind of price action you're expecting, [there's sure to be an option strategy tailor-made to help you maximize your profit potential]( (while keeping your risk profile in check). Of course, each different approach comes complete with its own set of pros and cons, and there's no such thing as a "one size fits all" strategy. With so many different ways to play puts and calls, be sure you've done the homework to know which method is best for you, or keep reading to learn about a special trial offer on one of our fan-favorite strategies! [Learn More]( [We Call the Plays. You Run Up the Big Scores.]( Whether you're on the football field or in the options market, there's an art and a skill to calling the right plays at the right time. That's why some football coaches are puttering around the house and catching up on their chore lists during the month of January, while others are grinding their way through the playoffs and prepping for the big game. So, how do you hone your chops as a play-caller? Sure, practice makes perfect. But there's an even simpler way to get started -- by seeking out the best, and learning from their years of experience. When you observe an expert at work and emulate their approach, you get to reap the benefits of their hard-won knowledge... without having to endure the rookie mistakes and missteps they struggled through at the beginning. It's the ideal situation for traders who are ready to ramp up their profit potential with options -- but would prefer to take the leap with the guidance of a trusted expert. Although there is significant profit potential associated with buying options, there is also the risk of losing one's entire investment in any individual trade. In any option buying approach, it is expected that losing trades will be more numerous than winning trades. The goal is for the average gain to be significantly greater than the average loss so that the bottom line is profitable. Prior to purchase, ensure that you have a broker that allows the trading of options and that you are approved to trade options.
