One thing that I find most beautiful about Thanksgiving, as a business owner, is the chance to let go of the efficiency mindset for a day and let things go inefficiently how they want to go... It might look like… When Uncle Vinny bursts through the door, telling you how much his dogs loved jumping in the creek down the street, as they roll around on your couch… “No problem, Uncle Vin” If cousin Penelope wants to mash up the baked potatoes by pounding them with her fists leaving a starchy tornado of mess… “That's a one-time mess we don’t mind cleaning up.” And when you overcook the turkey, everyone can just add a little extra gravy, crack a joke about it, and move on to dessert. 🥧… “Whew, they barely noticed thanks to grandma's famous gravy” But if I had the same mindset for Thanksgiving dinner as my business… ☁️☁️ I would hand out playbooks for all the various roles in the kitchen. “Aunt Terry, you got the first shift in the kitchen to bake. I got the flour down from the cabinet” “Grandma, you’re on pies. I’ll send some cousins to help you knead the crust.” “Uncle Vinny, you’re on cookies. Please don’t let your dog lick the spoon…” “Cousins, you’re on trash duty and floor cleaning.” With some occasional team guidelines updates when necessary… “Cousins under 12 years old, out of the kitchen” If we were going into Thanksgiving dinner like Q4 going into Q1 of next year… I would have a metrics scorecard on a whiteboard in the living room, showing our turkey & pie consumption KPIs, and a quarterly family ethos meeting before the kickoff of the turkey bowl football game. Granted, if our home kitchen crew was asked to operate as a restaurant.. we’d go out of business faster than you can say “butternut squash pie.” Thankfully, it’s one place where I can let these things roll off without them causing a major impact on my financial security. I can clean up the one-time messes without long term worry, not something that I can say for my business..
