Hi {NAME}, So now we’ve come to it…the “Third Law of Scale.” Just as a reminder, the two “Laws of Scale” we have covered so far are… LAW OF SCALE #1 Everything that made you great during the startup phase becomes a liability at scale… …which is why [you need to climb your “Second Mountain.”]( LAW OF SCALE #2 The more valuable YOU are to your business, the less valuable your business is… …which is why [your company needs an “Operating System.”]( Now that you understand these, you’re ready for the “Third Law of Scale,” which states… LAW OF SCALE #3 Every problem at scale becomes a “Who” problem, not a “How” problem. In other words, the old cliche is true: “It’s not WHAT you know, it’s WHO you know.” But why is this statement true, and why is it especially true at scale? It’s simple: time. When your business was small, time was all you had. If you didn’t know how to do something, you invested the time to figure it out because that was literally your only option. You couldn’t afford expensive consultants and forget about experienced executive talent. But as your business grows, your available time begins to become less and less and less… And this is the point where many business owners make the biggest mistake. Instead of working 8 hours, they start working 10, 12, 14 hours, and the next thing you know, they’re burnt out, and those extra hours don’t put any more money in their bank account. We’ve been trained to ask, "How can I do this?" when we want something done. But there is a better question to ask, and that question is… "Who can do this for me?" It may seem simple at first glance, but the ability to successfully ask, "Who can do this for me?" unlocks an entirely new world of scale because there is always someone out there who can do it better, faster, with less stress, and at greater scale than we could. (Oh yeah, and they’re probably cheaper, too.) Football teams can’t win with just a quarterback on the field… A spaceship doesn’t fly astronauts to space thanks to a single engineer… The Great Pyramids of Giza weren’t built by a single worker… And successful entrepreneurs don’t build multi-million and billion-dollar businesses entirely by themselves… Asking “who” not “how” allows us to create bigger and better things than we can do alone. Asking “who” not “how” has allowed me and my business partners to start and scale 17 companies, exit 4, and manage a current portfolio of 48 businesses. Asking “who” not “how” has allowed me to never miss a soccer practice or dance recital, have dinner every night with my family, and take my wife on a date every week.
