Hey there - I was cozied up on the couch last night, post-toddler bed time (ahhh, quiet), working on a crochet square. Dark, quiet, cold evenings happen to be the perfect time to put on T Swift’s latest album, Evermore. (Her work = one of the best parts of 2020, am I right?! Don’t answer that if you don’t agree. Let me have it, please + thank you.) Anyway, I’m about to put the finishing slipstitch into my square just as I get to song #13: Marjorie. It starts like this: Never be so kind you forget to be clever. Never be so clever you forget to be kind. It’s one of my favorite lyrics on the album. And it urged me to drop in with this short + sweet missive for you today — one I want you to remember each and every time you sit down to write a line of copy. Because when it comes to your copy, I want you to reframe T Swift’s wisdom to this: Never be so clear you forget to be clever. Never be so clever you forget to be clear. It’s the second line that I want you to remember — and if it’s easier, think of it this way: Clear over clever. If you’ve only got one shot to connect with your reader and convince them to take an action, clear will always beat out clever. And. If you’ve got room to breathe, bringing in a little cleverness — in the way of your personality; the quirks you know your readers will identify with; an inside joke only they’d understand — well, that can take that connection even further. So long as cleverness doesn’t dilute your message. In other, more Swiftian-style words: Never be so clever you forget to be clear.
