Jamie Raskin let slip this weekend that the committee was given a slew of new names when it heard testimony from former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham. "She had a number of names that I had not heard before, and she had some new ways of looking at it," Raskin said during an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday morning, adding that she had "identified some lines of inquiry that had never occurred to me." It's unclear who, exactly, Grisham's testimony may have implicated â but with the committee planning to take its findings public in the next few months, we'll surely find out soon enough. (Photo via Getty Images) none none The rise of eco-therapy Is climate change making you anxious? You aren't alone, Salon's Nicole Karlis reports: According to a study published in The Lancet last year, which surveyed 10,000 people aged 16 to 25 in 10 countries, more than 45 percent of those surveyed said that distress over climate change affected their daily life and ability to function. Seventy-five percent said that the future was "frightening," and 50 percent expressed feelings of powerlessness, helplessness, and guilt about the climate. There's even a small, but growing field within psychology some have taken to calling "eco-therapy," which helps patients cope with a climate anxiety through a blend of traditional talk therapy and immersion in nature. Particularly helpful, one eco-therapist told Salon, was encouraging people to seek out small acts of community involvement, such as cleaning up trash on a beach. "I don't think it necessarily takes that feeling away," one eco-therapist told Salon, "But I do think it helps them get a little bit more connected and creates a sense of hopefulness that taking these small little steps can create some bigger change." That's a shame, Salon history columnist Matt Rozsa writes â following a failed insurrection and the ongoing erosion of American democracy, the first president's words have never been more important: Washington's message touches on a number of subjects, and there's no use pretending that all of it fits with contemporary liberal or progressive politics. He firmly believed that religion was essential to public morality, for instance, and that it was crucial to balance the federal budget. (Of course, modern-day "conservatives" only pretend to believe in that one.) Other sections of the address are prescient but not specifically relevant to Jan. 6 and its aftermath: Washington's warning that America could become an empire if it gets entangled in overseas military adventures might have changed history if Cold War policymakers had heeded it. There's also a passage on the dangers of regionalism that, though arguably pertinent today, was clearly composed with issues like slavery and 18th-century economic policy in mind. But there are also portions of the farewell address that speak clearly to the present moment, in the wake of the 2020 election and the Jan. 6 attack. Take this key passage, in which Washington reflects on the political violence that marked the early days of the American republic. Before this, he discusses how America's original government, as established by the Articles of Confederation, had been too weak. Many people disliked the new Constitution for creating a more centralized state, and that led to serious friction and threats of political violence. Washington understood that democratic governments needed to be accountable, but that didn't mean people could resort to violence over every grievance. He writes: "The basis of our political systems is the right of the people to make and to alter their constitutions of government. But the Constitution which at any time exists, till changed by an explicit and authentic act of the whole people, is sacredly obligatory upon all. The very idea of the power and the right of the people to establish government presupposes the duty of every individual to obey the established government." If it seemed like a transparent attempt to troll online liberals, well, that's because it was â though it definitely worked as intended. Experts point to a growing strategy, first championed by right-wing activists, that has now filtered down to the Republican Party proper: Boil down complicated information into simplified morsels that don't even necessarily have to make sense. More important than the content is the idea that it filters the reader into a distinct group, and situates that same reader in opposition to another group. "You are being rage farmed," John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher of disinformation and cyberattacks at the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab, wrote in a tweet to people who were reacting angrily to the meme. He correctly pointed out that algorithmic social media feeds serve to turn even negative responses into a larger megaphone for right-wing ideas. "Your angry quote tweet = the goal."
