Some Democrats appear to think so. The Hill reported Friday that at least a dozen lawmakers have been holding meetings and speaking, both publicly and privately, about whether or not it would be possible to use Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to permanently bar Trump from seeking a second term. The clause bars someone from holding office if they: - Have "previously taken an oath" to "support the constitution," and... - "Engaged in insurrection or rebellion" against the United States Legal scholars are split on how to implement the provision — a controversial task, to say the least. There are currently three ideas floating around Capitol Hill: - A simple majority vote in both chambers of Congress that found Trump guilty of fomenting the insurrection would be enough to bar him from public office. - A "neutral" fact-finding body would have to determine whether Trump officially engaged in an "insurrection"or "rebellion" — a task for either a Congressional panel or federal court. - Local election officials could use Section 3 on a state-by-state basis to take Trump's name off their ballots if he were to run again in 2024. It's unclear how well any of this would work — the effort would face a major hurdle at the U.S. Supreme Court, which maintains a conservative majority after Trump appointed three justices to the bench during his four years in office. Or you may remember her viral college graduation photoshoot, the one in which she wore an AR-15 and frightened other students around the campus. But for those just tuning in, Bennett recently found a new viral trend to co-opt: a conversion to Catholicism. Salon's Kathryn Joyce reports that the 20-something Bennett managed to roll out a pregnancy announcement alongside a splashy video outlining her religious journey, ultimately seeking to not-so-subtly connect her own struggles as a widely-mocked fringe internet figure to that of the Virgin Mary (and even Jesus himself). Finding religion — particularly Catholicism — is not exactly a new phenomenon for the alt-right set, Joyce adds, with plenty of the movement's more online influencers tracing the same path in years past. What a difference one year can make. Today, he's more worried about staying out of prison — a very real threat that Salon's Lucian K. Truscott IV says may be coming down the pipe: It was [Bob] Woodward's appearance on MSNBC that really caught my attention. I've been a sort of Woodward tea-leaf reader since the Watergate days, throughout his various tomes on presidents as the years have passed. What has always amazed me about Woodward has been his almost congenital refusal to draw conclusions from the extensive reporting he's done on presidents and their administrations. He'll interview them and come up with extraordinary quotes and documentary evidence, but all he ever does is present it without comment. He has been called a "stenographer" for good reason, because of his reluctance or outright refusal to analyze or draw conclusions from some of the groundbreaking revelations he has reported over the years. But not this week. Brandishing handfuls of documents and looking as animated as I've ever seen him, Woodward made repeated charges that what Trump had done in attempting to overthrow the election of 2020 was "a crime against the Constitution." I'm not going to review my Woodward library on a quote-hunt, but I'm pretty sure it's the first time I've ever heard him accuse a president or former president of a crime. I'm dwelling on Woodward's recent appearances on television for a reason. Ever since his famous work on Watergate, he has made a point of not reporting anything unless he's confirmed it with multiple sources or has seen it written in a document he has in his possession. For that reason, Woodward has always known a lot more than he has written. He's not necessarily withholding information from his readers, he is simply meticulous about what he feels he can report as true and what he can't. In his appearances on television, he always seems beyond buttoned-up. He's clearly a guy who's not just careful about what he says, but obsessively so.
