The threats varied from typical Congressional bluster (Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said, for example, that the "Pelosi precedent" means that "all members will need the approval of the majority to keep their positions in the future") to the outright racist (Rep. Lauren Boebert targeted Somali-American Rep. Ilhan Omar in particular, calling her a "jihad squad member," implying she had married her brother and even going so far as to say she supported terrorism against Americans). All in all, it was a day that showed just how deeply broken the institution is — and that was before Gosar doubled down and [retweeted the video in question](~/AASU4wA~/RgRjeMVRP0SGaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2Fsb24uY29tLzIwMjEvMTEvMTcvcGF1bC1nb3Nhci1yZXR3ZWV0cy1hb2MtY2FydG9vbi12aWRlby0tbWludXRlcy1hZnRlci1iZWluZy1jZW5zdXJlZC1mb3ItaXRfcGFydG5lci8_dXNlcl9pZD0qfEVNQUlMfCpXA3NwY0IKYY5SQJZhokA-1FIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODVAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAAAo)[again](~/AASU4wA~/RgRjeMVRP0SGaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2Fsb24uY29tLzIwMjEvMTEvMTcvcGF1bC1nb3Nhci1yZXR3ZWV0cy1hb2MtY2FydG9vbi12aWRlby0tbWludXRlcy1hZnRlci1iZWluZy1jZW5zdXJlZC1mb3ItaXRfcGFydG5lci8_dXNlcl9pZD0qfEVNQUlMfCpXA3NwY0IKYY5SQJZhokA-1FIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODVAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAAAo), just minutes after being stripped of his committee assignments for posting it in the first place. When asked for her take on whether the vote put Democrats in jeopardy of losing committee assignments come 2023, Pelosi responded: "Democrats don't threaten the lives of other members." (Photo illustration by Salon/Getty Images) none FBI raids home of Rep. Lauren Boebert's ex-campaign manager The FBI raided the homes of at least four people Tuesday — including a Colorado election clerk and Rep. Lauren Boebert's former campaign manager — in relation to an alleged voting system security breach. And, wouldn't you know it, MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell seems to be at the center of it all. Tina Peters, the conspiratorial Colorado election clerk who made a name for herself by appearing at Lindell's widely panned "cyber symposium" (and later ducking the feds in a "safe house" arranged by the pillow maven), appeared to be the primary target of the raids. But also swept up in the investigation was Sherronna Bishop, who served as campaign manager for Boebert's first — and only — successful congressional campaign. Salon's Igor Derysh reports: Bishop has been one of Peters' most prominent allies in stoking unfounded allegations of voting machine problems in the election and hinted at a rally last month that she was privy to unreleased data from Mesa County and Lindell's "cybersecurity team." Week after week, month after month, the schizophrenic media narratives being created in the internet age are only getting more scatterbrained. Salon contributor Dan Froomkin argues our current political journalism problem comes from pundits and reporters attempting to cover two stories at once, without the slightest attempt to connect the two: They file the occasional story illustrating how the modern Republican Party has become anti-democracy, race-baiting, violence-inciting, shameless and untethered to reality. They report that its leaders defend the violent Jan. 6 coup attempt and are preparing to invalidate or dispute electoral defeats in the future. They observe the party's appeals to white supremacy and grievance. They describe Donald Trump as a conspiracy theorist who would be unlikely to respect any limits if returned to office. They sometimes point out that the Republican agenda, such as it is, consists only of legislative hostage-taking, lies, denial, obstruction and division. The inescapable conclusion is that if this Republican Party wins back control of even one house of Congress, they will grind governing to a halt — and that if they win the presidency again, democracy as we know it may well no longer exist. Meanwhile, these same political journalists are also handicapping the 2022 and 2024 elections as if things were normal — as if it were still just a choice between two equally legitimate political parties, rather than a referendum on whether the government should be allowed to function, whether the people should be allowed to pick their leaders in the future and whether white Christian nationalism formally replaces pluralism as the country's organizing principle. Andy Harris, an anesthesiologist by trade, spent all spring promoting COVID-19 vaccines, even appearing in a video alongside a number of other prominent Republican politicians (who also happened to be doctors) extolling the virtues of the shot. Fast forward six months, and the Maryland doctor is in danger of losing his medical license for prescribing unproven COVID-19 treatments — specifically the anti-parasite drug ivermectin. "An action is currently being attempted against my medical license for prescribing ivermectin, which I find fascinating, because as an anesthesiologist, I know I use a lot of drugs off-label that are much more dangerous," Harris said during a House Freedom Caucus meeting on Monday. What happened? In there somewhere is a parable of GOP radicalization, especially as it relates to medical misinformation. Harris, an otherwise good-standing physician prior to 2021, even went so far as to encourage a constituent who called into a radio show he was appearing on last month to research alternatives to vaccination promoted by [fringe medical group "America's Frontline Doctors"](~/AASU4wA~/RgRjeMVRP0R8aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2Fsb24uY29tLzIwMjEvMDkvMjIvZmxvcmlkYXMtbmV3LXN1cmdlb24tZ2VuZXJhbC1kci1qb3NlcGgtbGFkYXBvLWhhcy10aWVzLXRvLWZyaW5nZS1ncm91cC1wdXNoaW5nLWJvZ3VzLWN1cmVzL1cDc3BjQgphjlJAlmGiQD7UUht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW44NUBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAACg~) — the organization led by a conspiratorial Texas physician named Stella Immanuel, who is best known for suggesting that certain ailments may be caused by sperm from sexual visitations from demons and/or alien DNA. As of Wednesday evening, no disciplinary actions were reported against Harris by the Maryland Board of Physicians — though it's important to note that both the complaint and the investigative process are strictly confidential.
