The Virginia GOP hopeful was forced to boot a white nationalist supporter from a campaign event Saturday. But it's not his first run-in with extremism [Crash Course] Your daily update from [Salon](~/AASU4wA~/RgRjT9jBP0QWaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2Fsb24uY29tL1cDc3BjQgphaMRTbWGEzSn1Uht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW44NUBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAAA~). Glenn Youngkin's white nationalist problem What was supposed to be a routine campaign stop for Virginia GOP gubernatorial hopeful Glenn Youngkin became a scene [when Salon reporter Zachary Petrizzo spotted an attendee wearing a pro-Trump "Build the Wall" hat](~/AASU4wA~/RgRjT9jBP0SOaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2Fsb24uY29tLzIwMjEvMTAvMTcvdmlyZ2luaWEtY2FuZGlkYXRlLWdsZW5uLXlvdW5na2luLWZvcmNlZC10by1ib290LW5hdGlvbmFsaXN0LXN1cHBvcnRlci1mcm9tLWNhbXBhaWduLWV2ZW50Lz91c2VyX2lkPSp8RU1BSUx8KlcDc3BjQgphaMRTbWGEzSn1Uht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW44NUBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAAA~) and a white nationalist pin. The Youngkin team eventually kicked the man, who is a former local Republican leader and longtime far-right activist, out of the event. A spokesperson told Salon the incident was "antithetical" to the message Youngkin is trying to spread. But the incident showed a larger problem with the candidate's strategy — attempting to court the Trump vote by cozying up with election conspiracy theorists and anti-vaccine voices, while also claiming to be a common-sense moderate. It's not Youngkin's first brush with right-wing extremism, either: the candidate has appeared on former Trump adviser Sebastian Gorka's radio show. Gorka, if you'll remember, found himself in hot water after wearing the pin of a Nazi-linked group to Trump's inaugural ball. (Photo via Win McNamee/Getty Images) The triumphant return of "Succession" Smash HBO hit "Succession" is back with a new season that premiered Sunday night, and the Roy family hasn't changed a bit. "They're still a disaster, obscenely wealthy and unable to figure out what they're doing," Salon TV critic Melanie McFarland writes in her review of the latest episode. But boy, have we missed them. "'Succession' works because it confirms our suspicions that exorbitantly wealthy are not better or smarter than the average person, or even worthy of wielding the power they've inherited and hoard. Chucking at the venality of the people who hold the world and care nothing about anyone on it who isn't them is a mild temporary antidote to what ails us." "Vicariously enjoying their ridiculously posh meals and ridiculous parties helps too, mostly because they're distracting and fertile with possibilities for verbal and situational misadventure. Nothing could possibly top the top-shelf disaster of MC Ken in that department, but nine hours of solidly wrought satire and brutal snark is a much tastier payday. To paraphrase one of Kendall's hip-hop victims, this show is burning my eyes, but nothing can persuade me to look away." The time for compromise has passed It's popular for pundits and reporters alike to frame Sens. Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin's apparent knee-jerk opposition to Democratic legislation as "centrist" or "moderate" — but given the overwhelming popularity of President Joe Biden's stalled-out agenda, it would be more accurate to call them radicals. Erica Payne, the founder and president of a group called Patriotic Millionaires, argues for Salon that it is finally time for "Democrats to [get serious about exorcising the rot from the heart of their party](~/AASU4wA~/RgRjT9jBP0R3aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2Fsb24uY29tLzIwMjEvMTAvMTcvbm8tc3VycmVuZGVyLXByb2dyZXNzaXZlcy1tdXN0LW5vdC1jb21wcm9taXNlLW9uLWhpa2VzLWZvci10aGUtcmljaC8_dXNlcl9pZD0qfEVNQUlMfCpXA3NwY0IKYWjEU21hhM0p9VIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODVAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAAAA), and to stand up to these legislative hostage-takers." In particular, she says tax hikes for the rich are a matter of life-and-death for the Democratic Party, which has compromised with its Wall Street wing for far too long. "This is a fight progressives can and should win. The president of the United States is with them, and so are the vast majority of the American people and the bulk of Democratic primary voters. The shoe is on the other foot, at last. It's time for progressives to act with confidence and courage." - "[The day I cooked timpano with Stanley Tucci](~/AASU4wA~/RgRjT9jBP0RjaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cudGhlZ3VhcmRpYW4uY29tL2Zvb2QvMjAyMS9vY3QvMTcvdGhlLWRheS1pLWNvb2tlZC10aW1wYW5vLXdpdGgtc3RhbmxleS10dWNjaS1qYXktcmF5bmVyVwNzcGNCCmFoxFNtYYTNKfVSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjg1QGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAAA~~)," The Guardian - "[In the Land of the Godfather Comes a Ban on Them,](~/AASU4wA~/RgRjT9jBP0RUaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubnl0aW1lcy5jb20vMjAyMS8xMC8xNi93b3JsZC9ldXJvcGUvaXRhbHktZ29kZmF0aGVyLWNhdGhvbGljLWNodXJjaC5odG1sVwNzcGNCCmFoxFNtYYTNKfVSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjg1QGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAAA~~)" The New York Times - "[The dirty secrets of clean eating](~/AASU4wA~/RgRjT9jBP0RDaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuY29kYXN0b3J5LmNvbS93YXJvbnNjaWVuY2UvY2xlYW4tZWF0aW5nLW1pc2luZm9ybWF0aW9uL1cDc3BjQgphaMRTbWGEzSn1Uht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW44NUBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAAA~)," Coda Story - "[The Greatest Drinking Contest in History](~/AASU4wA~/RgRjT9jBP0RPaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cudGhlZGFpbHliZWFzdC5jb20vdGhlLWdyZWF0ZXN0LWRyaW5raW5nLWNvbnRlc3QtaW4taGlzdG9yeT9yZWY9aG9tZVcDc3BjQgphaMRTbWGEzSn1Uht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW44NUBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAAA~)," The Daily Beast - "[Edie Falco Knows How to Let Go](~/AASU4wA~/RgRjT9jBP0RZaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubmV3eW9ya2VyLmNvbS9jdWx0dXJlL3RoZS1uZXcteW9ya2VyLWludGVydmlldy9lZGllLWZhbGNvLWtub3dzLWhvdy10by1sZXQtZ29XA3NwY0IKYWjEU21hhM0p9VIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODVAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAAAA)," The New Yorker Joe Crowley sells out Before losing to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in 2018, Rep. Squire Patton Boggs, the massive corporate law firm where Crowley now works, was hired over the summer by the powerful Wall Street advocacy group Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), according to recently filed Senate disclosure documents. It's a shocking turn for the 10-term legislator, who was widely considered a favorite to take over as House Speaker after Rep. Nancy Pelosi decided to finally hand over the gavel.
