[Angry women have immense power and here's how they should use it, says author Soraya Chemaly](
The punishments women receive for not appearing sufficiently deferential are steep. You can be the greatest athlete in the world, but if you're female and especially if you're a female of color and your name is Serena Williams you will [be penalized for behavior]( that your male counterparts get away with. If you're an average lady walking down the street, you can expect strangers to tell you to smile, and harass you if you don't oblige. Is it any wonder so many of us are seething? Yet author and activist Soraya Chemaly has a reassuring message. Her new book asserts that ["Rage Becomes Her."]( But even writing about women's anger can make some people uneasy. "A lot of people respond to this book by saying, 'We don't need more anger in America,"' Chemaly told Mary Elizabeth Williams on âSalon Talks.â "The book is not saying, 'Let's all get madder.' The book is saying, 'There is rage. What's happening with this rage?' It hurts us. It hurts our bodies. It hurts workplaces. It hurts our politics. What we really are talking about is not anger management but anger competence. I think there is joy and creativity and immense political power in understanding how to use it." The key to harnessing the rage we're feeling, she says, is to find our tribes. "Anger can be isolating," Chemaly notes. "If you find other people who share your values, who are moved by the same issues then you shift the way that anger is felt and the way that it is used." [Listen to Masegoâs totally unique sound on âSalon Stage,â and on his debut full-length album âLady Ladyâ](
Masego's official debut album,[ "Lady Lady,"]( released last week, embodies the "TrapHouseJazz" genre he coined. It's a mash up of instruments and genres delivering a sonic journey that is wholly unique. Beyond the inventive soundscapes that underscore the project, "Lady Lady" is infused with stories of relationships and interactions with women. It's an album of reflections. During a âSalon Stageâ live session, Masego demonstrated his mastery of instrumentation by reinventing his song "Navajo" live, including a special interlude where he picks up the saxophone. Watch the video above, and check out the full live session on [YouTube]( . "I think it's great because it's really just a bunch of stories and I love storytelling and hip hop," Masego told SalonTV. "I feel like that's what really made me enjoy making the album. Jam sessions, storytelling, and just praising women for the influence they've had to making me who I am today." For some artists who have been in the music industry for years like Masego and received cosigns from major artists, there may be pressure associated with delivering a debut album. But Masego manages to always rejoice in the moment. "I'm not going to pretend every single step is easy," he said, adding: "There's a lot of laughter in the journey and a lot of great music and creation." [Neil deGrasse Tyson gives the scientific case for Trumpâs Space Force and adds an idea: asteroid defense](
Renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson says Trumpâs idea to establish a Space Force as the sixth branch of the military isnât the craziest idea. In fact, it makes a lot of sense scientifically and geopolitically, he explained to SalonTVâs Amanda Marcotte on âSalon Talks.â âJust because it came out of Trumpâs mouth doesnât make it the craziest idea. We should evaluate it on its own,â Tyson said. But, the scientist noted, we already have a space force, referencing the U.S. Space Command branch of the Air Force. The proposed new branch of Space Force would simply move those activities into a separate division. If the president goes ahead with the idea, Tyson has some recommendations that maybe not everyone is thinking of, such as an asteroid defense program and space debris clean up efforts. The topic is close to Tysonâs current project, a new book exploring the relationship between astrophysics, technology and the military, [âAccessory to War: The Unspoken Alliance Between Astrophysics and the Military,â]( co-authored by researcher Avis Lang. The book combines his personal experience and research with historical context to examine how the universe has been used as both a laboratory and a battlefield across science, technology and power. Watch the video above to hear more from Tyson on where he thinks the United States should be focusing its efforts on war and space. And, check out the [full interview]( to hear about how Tyson grappled with the idea that technology and scientific discoveries have been used to wage war. [Ian McEwan turns life-changing legal case into Emma Thompson drama âThe Children Actâ](
Who has the right to decide life: God, the individual or the state? Screenwriter and author Ian McEwanâs latest film âThe Children Act,â in theaters September 14, explores this deeply personal and political question through the perspective of a judge, played by Emma Thompson, deciding the case of a 17-year-old Jehovah's Witness with leukemia whose family is fighting for his right to refuse treatment. On âSalon Talks,â McEwan opened up about why the timeless concept inspired âThe Children Actâ novel, published in 2014, and the accompanying screenplay. McEwan, an atheist, supports Dignity in Dying, an organization that backs the legal right to die for the terminally ill, but understands the opposite side. âPeople argue quite persuasively that only God gives life and only God can take it away, and how dare you rise to this state of declaring yourself able to allow people to do it for themselves,â he said. As a storyteller, McEwan says heâs built his entire 40-year literary career around âhuman issuesâ surrounding love, sex, religion, law and death because theyâre timeless across eras. âOne of the reasons we love our literature and movies and why we love movies of 50 years ago, is basically that the human issues don't change. Is my wife, is my husband honest? Do I trust this person, don't I trust this person? That field remains the same,â McEwan said. âThat's why we can read Homeric fables, of Odysseus returning to Penelope, and when she doesn't recognize him, he's been away 20 years, and they have a little marital spat.â Check out the video above to hear McEwan talk about how technology affects timeless human questions around life and death and watch the [full episode]( to hear why Thompson was McEwanâs first choice to play the lead role of the judge in âThe Children Act.â Tune in for SalonTV's live shows, ["Salon Talks"]( and ["Salon Stage"]( , daily at noon ET / 9 a.m. PT and 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT, streaming live on [YouTube]( and Salon.com.
