[In "Nowhere to Hide" documentary, watch war-torn Iraq fight a new, menacing force: ISIS](
Fifteen years after the US-led invasion of Iraq, the country continues to dominate the headlines with stories of sectarian violence, bombings, poverty and human displacement. Watch this exclusive clip from the documentary âNowhere to Hideâ above from Kurdish-Norwegian filmmaker Zaradasht Ahmed. In 2011, Ahmed returned to his birth country, heading into one of the worldâs most dangerous areas, the âTriangle of Deathâ in central Iraq. As American troops withdrew, he followed nurse Nori Sharif and his family over five years as they navigated a war-torn country where a power vacuum left citizens vulnerable to a new, menacing force: ISIS. The film has won international awards, including Best Feature Length Documentary at IDFA, Best Documentary at the One World Human Rights Festival, the Nestor Almendros Prize for courage in filmmaking at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival, and several other awards at film festivals. âNowhere to Hideâ has its national broadcast and streaming debut on the PBS documentary series POV and pov.org on Monday, August 27, 2018, at 10 p.m. ET (check local listings). POV is American televisionâs longest-running independent documentary series now in its 31st season. Want more documentary content? [Masego performs a reimagined rendition of his song "Queen Tings"](
Masego, the genre-bending, self-taught saxophonist, pianist, singer and producer, finds his sweet spot in the in-between. Pioneering a music genre blend dubbed "TrapHouseJazz," which he coined at the age of 15, the artist performs a completely reimagined version of his song âQueen Tings.â Recently, Masego played a live set for âSalon Stageâ where he performed popular records of his. He produced on the spot, whipped out his saxophone when needed and crooned, his voice both intoxicating and mesmerizing. However, Masego's music is not just in conversation with the many instruments he plays or with the genres â like Trap music, House music and Jazz â of which he's most inspired by. Masego's culture and upbringing is also deeply influential. He is the product of Jamaican parents; his early musical exposure came from the church and he was raised in Virginia, from the area that produced musical icons like Pharrell, Missy Elliott and Clipse. Despite Masego's popularity and collaboration with some of music's brightest like GoldLink, SiR, and DJ Jazzy Jeff, he hasn't released a debut album yet. But that's all about to change, as his 13-track debut titled "Lady Lady" will arrive Sept. 7. And that's not all. Masego will also head on the road with Leon Bridges and then headline his own tour this fall. Watch the video above to experience Masego's unique sounds in his completely reimagined version of âQueen Tingsâ and to hear the young musician speak about why he makes music and the journey his songs take over time. [Darnell Moore learns to forgive the vicious homophobia he experienced as a child](
Imagine being an innocent kid, walking home from school, reflecting on your day and feeling excited to see your family, when you are violently interrupted by kids from your own neighborhood. They surround you, knock you to the ground and taunt you by calling you gay, all before pouring gasoline on you and trying to spark a lighter. This is exactly what happened to leading Black Lives Matter activist and writer Darnell Moore when he was 14, in Camden, New Jersey ââ and that wouldnât be the first or last time he almost lost his life because of vicious homophobia and being a young black man in America. Recently Moore stopped by âSalon Talksâ to share this story, his growth and explain to us why he forgave the young men who attacked him. âI really donât believe in the disposing of black people,â Moore told SalonTVâs D. Watkins. âI really donât believe in doing to each other what the system has done to us, and I donât believe that punishment and carceral tools are avenues for transformation.â Now Darnell Moore is an award-winning author, activist and advocate for justice. In his new memoir [âNo Ashes in the Fire: Coming of Age Black and Free in America,â]( Moore shares the journey taken by that scared, bullied teenager who not only survived but found his calling. He sat down with me in Salon's studio to discuss his book, forgiveness, freedom and radical black love. Watch the video above to learn more about how Darnell Moore learned to forgive in life. And check out the [full interview]( to hear how Moore wrestled with his identity growing up as a queer black man. [Stacey Abrams is charming Georgia voters with her fierce ambition: "My goal is to solve problems"](
If our current political climate has taught us anything, it has shown us that politics is a dirty game. It has also demonstrated the dangers of sitting on our hands during election time and allowing the wrong people to assume office, as we are now paying the price. We should value great candidates like Stacey Abrams, who, unlike our current president, truly wants to improve the lives of her constituents. Stacey Abrams, former Georgia House Minority Leader, could make history, as she is running to be the first elected African-American woman governor in the United States. Itâs an extremely difficult journey as she faces racism and sexism in a campaign administered by her opponents. Abrams joined âSalon Talksâ to discuss power, politics and why diverse voices are needed. âIâm an introvert by nature,â Abrams told SalonTVâs D. Watkins. âOn the spectrum, Iâm really close to be[ing] a person living in a cabin in the woods, but I find poverty problematic; itâs immoral. I think itâs economically inefficient, and Iâm a very goal oriented person. My goal is to solve these problems, and it turns out that you have to talk to people to get it done.â âI had to overcome being more reserved, and that has made politics difficult. Politics normally requires you to be a glad-hander, that you enjoy engaging and talking and chatting and hanging out, and thatâs not what I do, but what I do care about are peopleâs problems. I want to talk about how I can help solve them.â Watch the [full interview]( to learn more about Abrams and her historic run. Tune in for SalonTV's live shows, ["Salon Talks"]( and ["Salon Stage"]( , daily at noon ET / 9 a.m. PT and 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT, streaming live on [YouTube]( , [Facebook]( and [Periscope]( .
