["The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" turns 20: How the hip-hop artist paved the way for millennial women](
"The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," Lauryn Hill's 1998 solo debut, is often lauded as one of the greatest albums of all time. Award-winning author, hip-hop journalist and scholar, Joan Morgan, argues on âSalon Talksâ that the impact of that album and Hill's legacy goes far beyond the music. In her new book, ["She Begat This: 20 Years of the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,"]( Morgan explains how Hill was both a musical and visual intervention to hip-hop and pop culture. "Lauryn showed up on the scene and rose to a Beyoncé level of fame, insisting that she look exactly like she looked," Morgan told SalonTVâs Rachel Leah. "She really kicked the door wide open for what we routinely, visually call Black Girl Magic now, before we had the term and before we had the hashtag." Morgan also pointed out the public's resistance to Hill's young pregnancy and questions the music industryâs and fans lack of empathy for Hill. After all, Hill's legacy is muddled for some. She has a slim body of work, has earned a reputation for being hard to work with (with the lawsuits to prove it), and is notorious for being hours late to her shows. But Morgan says we should recognize Hill's humanity, and most importantly, that "a 23 year-old woman came out, was resolutely herself, unapologetically herself and gave us a space to enter and to grow in. And sometimes that's enough." In "She Begat This," Morgan enlists other cultural trailblazers, like #MeToo founder [Tarana Burke]( , magazine legend Kierna Mayo, cultural critic dream hampton, image activist Michaela Angela Davis, among other artists, DJs and scholars, to tell an oral history of Hill and the way she transformed the culture. [Chef Marcus Samuelsson on how a good meal transcends politics: Food âdoesn't have an R or D behind itâ](
Renowned chef Marcus Samuelsson of [Red Rooster]( ) is celebrating the delicious and diverse cuisines of American cities in a new six-part television series, [âNo Passport Required,â]( which heâs hosting and executive producing for PBS. He joined âSalon Talksâ to talk about why he chose to visit vibrant immigrant communities where the creativity behind each dish is as deep and rich as the history. âUnless you're native everyone is an immigrant in American, right? Doesn't matter how we got here, right?â Samuelsson, who was born in Ethiopia, raised in Sweden, and now based in Harlem, told SalonTVâs D. Watkins. In thinking about what type of food show he wanted to create, Samuelsson was set on spotlighting immigrants. âWe are all kind of dealing with this moment that we are in. We know itâs very unique, we are all being challenged, especially as a black man you are constantly being challenged from day one, so thatâs actually been helpful in this process, because we are always under attack.â Samuelsson said. The chef, who says heâs been an immigrant six times in different countries, chose to explore the cuisines of Detroitâs Middle Eastern community, the Indo-Guyanese community in Queens, Haitians in Miami and Ethiopians in Washington, just to name a few. During the filming of âNo Passport Required,â Samuelsson also picked up some cooking inspiration. âAs chefs, we don't just get great ideas from an expensive restaurants, it's actually the opposite,â Samuelsson said. âWe want to eat things that are foreign to us because out of that journey like, âOh, maybe there's a way to tweak this.ââ Watch the interview above to learn more about the show and to hear Samuelsson talk about musicâs connection to food. [Trayvon Martin film directors call out âstand your groundâ laws, cite fatal Markeis McGlockton case](
Directors Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason are giving new context to the death of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed African-American teenager who was shot and killed by Florida neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman six years ago. The directors joined âSalon Talksâ to discuss the making of their six-part documentary series,âRest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story,â which airs on BET and the Paramount Network and is backed by executive producer Jay-Z. The series revisits Martinâs case, the trialâs not-guilty verdict, and why Floridaâs âstand your groundâ laws need reform. The filmmaking duo, who won a Peabody Award for their docuseries [âTime: The Kalief Browder Story,â]( say they want the series to serve as a wake up call around racism for Americans who may have gone numb to the 24-7 headlines under President Trump. According to Willoughby Nason, the âRest In Powerâ series âgives you context from Trayvon to Trump and the six years of tissue between all of the elements at play.â Furst added, âThis film is more important than ever. I think that people are numb, people are apathetic, people are getting tired by the barrage of bad news and I think weâre losing a sense of context.â The six-part series combines home videos, family photos and news footage and asks viewers to question the laws, politics and gun policies that led to Martinâs death and enabled Zimmerman to walk away without prison time. âWith all the work that we make, especially work about race in this country, I think we want to hammer home at a bigger storyline, and that is that racism is economics, racism is capitalism, that racism serves peopleâs pockets, and that if we continue to be divided, the lowest among us, both black and white, are going to continue to suffer,â Furst said. He cited Floridaâs âstand your groundâ laws that were discussed around Martinâs case and today in the case of Markeis McGlockton, who was fatally shot outside a convenience store in Clearwater, Florida by Michael Drejka. Watch the interview above to learn more about the making of the series and the new information itâs providing about what happened to Zimmerman after the trial. And, watch SalonTVâs full conversation with [Martinâs parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin]( who played a big role in the making of âRest in Powerâ and are supporting mothers and fathers who have lost children to gun violence through the [Trayvon Martin Foundation]( ).
