[Music video premiere: Amos Leeâs âDying White Lightâ is healing hate on Charlottesville anniversary](
One year after the white supremacist riot in Charlottesville, VA, singer-songwriter Amos Lee is using his music to help listeners heal from hate with a new song [âDying White Lightâ]( , available now. Salon is premiering the video for the song, which you can watch above. Leeâs deep connections to the Charlottesville community prompted him to write and reflect on the realities of hate and the alt-rightâs presence in America. âWe all watched the news when that stuff went down. I was crying. Itâs just amazing to me that an openly hateful group of people can march in a city and feel the things they feel together,â Lee told Salon. âI can't even comprehend how you can wake up with that much hate in your heart every day.â Lee wrote âDying White Lightâ from the perspective of the wife of a white supremacist who is trying to shield her children from the intense bigotry around them. The singer-songwriter did not feel "Dying White Light" would fit the tone and themes of his upcoming album, âMy New Moon,â out August 31, so he is releasing the song one year after Charlottesville and donating proceeds to the Heal Charlottesville Foundation, which focuses on solving racial inequality and addressing bias. Catch Lee performing live on âSalon Stage,â SalonTVâs online music show, on September 13 at 1 p.m. ET.. Lee will do acoustic renditions off his new album while heâs in New York for his nationwide tour. You can watch âSalon Stageâ streaming live on [YouTube]( , [Facebook]( and [Periscope]( . [Jerry OâConnell was convinced Rob Reinerâs âStand By Meâ would never be released](
On âSalon Talks,â actor Jerry OâConnell reveals why he never thought his breakout first role in [Rob Reiner]( âs classic âStand By Meâ would never make it to theaters or result in an acting career. âMy father said, âListen, don't tell anybody that you were in a movie because that movie will never come out. They make these movies all the time. It's an independent movie, trust me, it won't even be released, that's it,ââ OâConnell explained to SalonTVâs Alli Joseph. Turns out, the film jump started OâConnellâs career, and today, he jokes, heâs still remembered endearingly as Vern, or as OâConnell puts it âthe fat kid in âStand By Meâ.â Watch the video above to hear more about the evolution of his career and more anecdotes from OâConnellâs childhood as a New York City Village kid in the 1980s. Currently, OâConnell is starring in the new WGN America series âCarter.â Watch the [full interview]( to learn more about that role and the lessons he learned from his character, who is very self-involved and pretty vain. [âLike Father" director Lauren Miller Rogen asks Netflix for a new official category: âdramedyâ](
Lauren Miller Rogen wrote, directed and produced Netflix's newest original movie, "Like Father,â starring Kelsey Grammer and Kristen Bell and streaming now. It's a comedy, or rather, dramedy that finds a father and daughter reconnecting after 26 years apart and follows their complicated and funny journey of forgiveness. Miller Rogen opens up on âSalon Talksâ about how she tapped into her family's own trauma to write the script, and what it was like to direct her husband, Seth Rogen, who is an actor in the film. Watch the video above to hear why she thinks Netflix needs to recategorize comedies like hers that are funny, but also kind of sad. âI infused my own personal journey into the fictional one that we created,â Miller Rogen shared with SalonTVâs Rachel Leah. âI havenât lived a life without my father, but I have experienced sadness and anger. I felt those things while I was writing the script. My mom, who has Alzheimerâs disease, was becoming more advanced in the disease and I was in this sort of dark, angry place.â Miller Rogen founded Hilarity for Charity in 2012 in support of Alzheimerâs awareness and has since raised over $10 million. As far as working with Rogen, âwhat a diva!â Miller Rogen joked. âLike Fatherâ is Miller Rogenâs feature directorial debut and she says Rogen was very supportive, even if they bickered a bit on the set, which took place an actual Royal Caribbean cruise ship. âThereâs no one else I trust more than him. I donât think anyone else is more talented than he is. Heâs my best friend who does what I do and Iâm lucky to have him around,â Miller Rogen said. Watch the full interview above to hear Miller Rogen comment on the underrepresentation of female directors, and her personal story as a writer, director and producer. Plus, she unpacks how she is experiencing the #MeToo movementâs positive and direct impact today in Hollywood. Tune in for interviews with actors, directors, artists and more on SalonTV's live shows, ["Salon Talks"]( and ["Salon Stage"]( , daily at noon ET / 9 a.m. PT and 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT, streaming live on [YouTube]( , [Facebook]( and [Periscope]( .

[The alt-right did not rise out of nowhere: Author David Neiwert explains radical right's evolution](
Donald Trumpâs fiercest supporters have been deemed the âalt-right," the term for a group of white nationalists, anti-feminists, and general far-right deplorables that have risen up in recent years â in many eyes, seemingly out of nowhere. Author and journalist David Neiwert joined "Salon Talks" to dispels the myth that movement grew out of nowhere. Neiwert's book,âAlt-America: The Rise of the Radical Right in the Age of Trump," traces the evolution of what we now call the alt-right to its roots in the '90s-era militia movement and the conspiracy theorists and cranks that have been steadily building their following for decades. Neiwert told SalonTV's Amanda Marcotte who these alt-righters are, and why Trump has been what they call an âemperor godâ for them. âThe alt-right really is a mix of old and new,â Neiwert explained. âItâs got all the elements of white nationalism and white supremacism and that sort of thing in it, as well as nativism and Ku Klux Klan neo-confederacy.â âThe only real difference is that, unlike the old far right, this new far right is geared towards recruiting young people,â he continued. âTheyâre trying to recruit young white men between ages 16 and 30, really. Thatâs their target audience.â âTheyâve actually been disturbingly successful in doing that,â Neiwert said, noting that the alt-right may be even better than the left at exploiting the internet, meme culture, and social media to reach young audiences in ways that are often out of view to the mainstream. While the alt-right predates Trumpâs candidacy, Neiwert argued, itâs nearly impossible to overrate his value as a motivating and organizing force for this burgeoning movement of racist extremists. Watch the vide above to find out why Neiwert thinks it looked like the alt-right was looking like it was going to to fall apart by mid-2015, and why it didn't. Tune in for politics, entertainment and analysis on Salonâs live interview show, âSalon Talks,â daily at noon ET / 9 a.m. PT and 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT, streaming live on [YouTube]( , [Facebook]( and [Periscope]( .
