[How to reform a police department](
D. Watkins doesnât know what itâs like to not be harassed by police, but heâs hopeful that change is happening. New York City recently phased out Stop and Frisk, and soon after saw crime hit historic lows. The city of Milwaukee recently awarded $3.4 millions to victims of police misconduct with the ACLUâs help. Change may really be in the air, so today on the Salon 5 we are going to ride that wave of change and teach cops how they should be patrolling poor neighborhoods. [Martin O'Malley](
Can Democrats unite around one strong message and strengthen the party? Former Maryland Governor Martin OâMalley is trying to help Democrats win districts across the country in midterm elections with his Win Back Your State PAC. On âSalon Talks,â the 2016 presidential candidate gave his read on the new wave of progressive candidates sweeping the country. âThey were motivated to run because of Donald Trump in a sort of noble reactivism,â OâMalley told Salonâs Matthew Rozsa. âThey learned that people donât want to hear about Donald Trump on their doors. Theyâre sick of him.â According to OâMalley, whoâs traveled to over 20 states in support of candidates, this yearâs Democratic contenders are emphasizing the timeless American message of âopportunity for allâ and addressing peopleâs real anxieties, like health care, college affordability and jobs. While OâMalley encourages calling out President Trumpâs lies and missteps on immigration and Russia, he reveals why he is ultimately still hopeful about America's future. âThirty-six states are electing new governors and state legislatures and people believe that they can save our country by saving their own democracy in their own state,â OâMalley said. Watch the interview above to hear more about the work OâMalley is doing in state races and his advice for Congress on passing gun reform. [Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal of "Blindspotting"](
Tony and Grammy Award winner and original âHamiltonâ cast member Daveed Diggs brings his latest project, a movie he co-wrote and co-stars in with his longtime friend, Rafael Casal, about their hometown Oakland, to âSalon Talks.â âBlindspotting,â a wild story about friendship, gets deep on racial tensions, inequality, and the ills of gentrification. The duo is hoping to spark real conversations, beyond the film, around when neighborhoods fall victim to gentrification. âWe are in the clap-back generation and everything is a quick response and a move on and there arenât a lot of spaces for the conversation to incubate. One of those places that are available to us is a movie theater,â Casal told SalonTVâs D Watkins. Diggs and Casal share what it was like to see Oakland transform before their eyes. âIt's just financial capital, not cultural capital,â Diggs said. âWhat we're trying to grapple with and I think a lot of cities are grappling with is like, is there a way to invest in a community that's been here and get returns.â The duo worked on bringing the movie to the big screen for nearly a decade. Watch the interview above to hear why they stuck with it for so long and how Diggs thinks Thomas Jefferson, his âHamiltonâ character, would see Trump.Tune in for SalonTV's live shows, ["Salon Talks"]( and ["Salon Stage"]( , daily at noon ET / 9 a.m. PT and 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT, streaming live on [YouTube]( , [Facebook]( and [Periscope]( .
[How the GOP destroyed progressive politics](
Wisconsin: itâs a state where everyone was sure Clinton would win (and didnât) in 2016. It used to be known as the bastion for progressive politics, until conservatives, Tea Partiers and Scott Walker took over and turned it into a laboratory for the GOP. On âSalon Talks,â author Dan Kaufman presents his new book, [âThe Fall of Wisconsin: The Conservative Conquest of a Progressive Bastion and the Future of American Politics,â]( which details one of the most shocking upheavals in recent political history and how Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker has completely inverted the state. âOne thing that was hugely significant was how Governor Scott Walker had de-unionized the state aggressively,â Kaufman told Salonâs Amanda Marcotte. âThat was then copied by other states, and it began a nationwide demonization of public workers.â Watch the interview above to learn more about how Republicans toppled Wisconsin progressivism and what climate led to the downfall of Paul Ryanâs political career. Can a Democrat like union leader [Randy Bryce]( rebuild Wisconsinâs legacy in 2018?
