[Molly Crabapple turns war into art](
Award-winning artist and journalist Molly Crabapple is changing how the world views war and resistance movements. Through her ink and splatter style illustrations, Crabapple has covered the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York, the anti-austerity movement in Greece, terrorist hearings on Guantanamo Bay, and worked with Jay-Z for a project around the war on drugs. On âSalon Talks,â Crabapple shared the inspiration behind her latest assignment, co-writing and illustrating âBrothers of the Gun: A Memoir of the Syrian Warâ with Syrian journalist Marwan Hisham. Drawings are more powerful than photographs in terms of showing humanity and conveying emotion, Crabapple attests. âI feel like the Syrian War is perhaps the most photographed, documented war in history with the possible exception of course of Palestine. But I feel that with these photos sometimes â all these photos of broken bodies and broken cities â can commove a sort of numbness,â she told Salonâs Rachel Leah. âWe really wanted to show people with dignity, with humanity, with nuance, with depth, with interiority.â Crabapple traces Hishamâs story from pre-war Syria, through the early aughts of the peopleâs revolution, the ways in which the revolution was co-opted and betrayed, and todayâs current state of chaos. Hisham co-authored the book from his hometown in ISIS-occupied Raqqa and collaborated with Crabapple by taking photos, which she then turned into illustrations. Watch the interview above to hear how Crabapple tackled writing about the region for an American audience. [The value of electing veterans](
Amy McGrath served her country as one of the first female fighter pilots, flying 89 missions in Afghanistan and Iraq. Now sheâs looking to serve a âsecond serviceâ by running for office in Kentuckyâs Sixth Congressional District as a Democrat. McGrath joined âSalon Talksâ to discuss her campaign and what motivated her to jump into politics. She says the GOP is failing to think of constituents first. âRepublicans that donât take a stand against Trump when they know inside, they know what heâs doing and what he says and what he tweets is just wrong and un-American, itâs sad to me,â McGrath said. Having more lawmakers in office with military service would make a difference in Washington, according to McGrath, because of the values and training instilled in the job. âWe know how to work on a mission to get things done, even if weâre from different areas or backgrounds.â To hear more about McGrathâs story and why she thinks she can beat Mitch McConnellâs handpicked nominee, watch the video above. [Retta of "Parks and Recreation"](
Retta, who played Donna on âParks and Recreation,â joined Salonâs D. Watkins to share her hilarious journey to Hollywood and stories from her new memoir âSo Close to Being the Sh*t, Y'all Don't Even Know.â On âSalon Talks,â Retta talks about why she abandoned her medical school plans and chased her dream of starring in her own sitcom instead. Plus, she opens up about race and finding her own voice in the industry. âI used to fear the black audience early on in my stand-up career, then I did a show with Cheryl Underwood. This was a college gig and the audience was mostly white and I opened for Cheryl at the time,â Retta told Salon. âI remember watching Cheryl just be herself and killing in this room and I was like oh, you should just be yourself. I saw it, where I done black rooms where I didnât feel urban enough for this room and Iâd watch white comics get up and decimate a room and I was like âthat person is just being themselves.ââ Watch the video above to hear about Rettaâs new project and how she was almost casted to play Effe in âDreamgirls.â Tune in for SalonTV's live shows, "Salon Talks" and "Salon Stage", daily at noon ET / 9 a.m. PT and 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT, streaming live on Salon, Facebook and Periscope.
[David Duchovny](
David Duchovny brings his new novel, âMiss Subways,â an eclectic New York City love story, to âSalon Talks.â The two-time Golden Globe award winner talks to Salonâs executive editor Andrew OâHehir about the release of his third novel which is loosely based on the dark, comedic story around the Irish mythology-inspired Yeats play, âThe Only Jealousy of Elmer.â Duchovny, who has a masterâs in English literature from Yale and was destined for a writing career of some sort, revealed that it was actually his experiences on the award-winning show âThe X-Filesâ where he learned how to write good stories. âAny kind of drama better be plot heavy, especially television. It has to be plot-heavy,â Duchovny said on âSalon Talks.â âIt stripped away that pretension of art for art's sake or language for languageâs sake or a novel is a language experiment or some kind of Wittgenstein conception of language. They were like âFâ you David, give us a f**king good story! Iâm gonna write stories and Iâm gonna bring my love of language into it for sure, but Iâm gonna make sure that Iâm telling a story thatâs worthwhile.â Watch the full interview above to learn more about how Duchovny wrote from the female perspective in âMiss Subwaysâ and what parts of the book he rewrote after the #MeToo movement came into the spotlight.
