[How to serve coffee without racism](
America can be an extremely tough place for black people. The history of public lynchings, racist political policies, police violence and out right discrimination is well documented, and the story continues as two young African American men were arrested for no other reason outside of being black and sitting in a Starbucks in Philadelphia. As a result, the coffee company is closing 8,000 of its stores for a half day of racial bias training. What do baristas need to learn? Today on the Salon 5, D. Watkins is giving tips on what he would add to Starbucksâ anti-racist curriculum. [Molly Crabapple turns war into art](
Award-winning artist and journalist Molly Crabapple is changing how the world views war and resistance movements. Through her ink and splatter style illustrations, Crabapple has covered the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York, the anti-austerity movement in Greece, terrorist hearings on Guantanamo Bay, and worked with Jay-Z for a project around the war on drugs. On âSalon Talks,â Crabapple shared the inspiration behind her latest assignment, co-writing and illustrating âBrothers of the Gun: A Memoir of the Syrian Warâ with Syrian journalist Marwan Hisham. Drawings are more powerful than photographs in terms of showing humanity and conveying emotion, Crabapple attests. âI feel like the Syrian War is perhaps the most photographed, documented war in history with the possible exception of course of Palestine. But I feel that with these photos sometimes â all these photos of broken bodies and broken cities â can commove a sort of numbness,â she told Salonâs Rachel Leah. âWe really wanted to show people with dignity, with humanity, with nuance, with depth, with interiority.â Crabapple traces Hishamâs story from pre-war Syria, through the early aughts of the peopleâs revolution, the ways in which the revolution was co-opted and betrayed, and todayâs current state of chaos. Hisham co-authored the book from his hometown in ISIS-occupied Raqqa and collaborated with Crabapple by taking photos, which she then turned into illustrations. Watch the interview above to hear how Crabapple tackled writing about the region for an American audience. [Clapper on how US became âripe targetâ](
Former director of national intelligence James Clapper gives his take on what motivated Russia to get involved in the 2016 presidential election. On âSalon Talks,â Clapper tied Russiaâs support for candidate Donald Trump in the 2016 race to Putinâs deep disdain for Hillary Clinton. âTheir first objective was simply to sow doubt, discord, discontent in this country, and I think they succeeded fairly well because we're a ripe target for that,â Clapper told Salonâs Andrew OâHehir. âAnd secondly, because starting with a strong personal animus that Putin has for the Clintons, and specifically for Secretary Clinton, was to do everything they could to denigrate and marginalize her.â Clapper, whose new book [âFacts and Fears: Hard Truths from a Life in Intelligenceâ]( is out now, explained Russiaâs long history of undermining American democracy. âThis is classic. It goes back to the Soviet era, and it's almost in their genes to do this. There's a fundamental resentment of the United States, starting with Vladimir Putin. He held Hillary Clinton responsible for prompting what he thought was another call to revolution to overturn him. With the Panama Papers, the doping scandal, and all these revelations, he deeply resented those.â Watch the video above for Clapperâs assessment of the Steele dossier and check out the [full interview]( for his reflections on the current state of the intelligence community. [H. Jon Benjamin](
Actor H. Jon Benjamin, star of the concurrent animated hits ["Bob's Burgers"]( and ["Archer"]( , says that he never really had a strong calling for comedy. Or for voice work. And maybe that's the secret of his success in comedy and voice work. His new book ["Failure Is an Option: An Attempted Memoir,"]( , which he discussed on âSalon Talks,â does for the printed word what he does for dialogue â makes the absurd brilliantly deadpan. Tracing a life that's been blessed with a multitude of setbacks and disappointments, Benjamin advises that sometimes the only way you can move forward is when every other option has refused to pan out. "The book is a bunch of stories of personal failures in my life, but I think I tried and failed to provide the argument that failure works," he told Salonâs Mary Elizabeth Williams. "Because I developed a sense of detachment from wanting to succeed in [my] specific occupation early on, I learned as I wentâ¦. I think that attitude helped me adjust slowly and progressively to do what I do, and I think that ended up affording me a better attitude." Watch the video above to see Benjamin reveal the hazards of ordering the steak on a plane, and why his "Sex and the City" spirit animal is Charlotte.
