[Antonio Banderas takes on Picasso](
Acting superstar Antonio Banderas and newcomer Alex Rich joined Salonâs D. Watkins to discuss one of the most important roles for both of their careers, the prolific artist Pablo Picasso. Banderas and Rich share the title role of one of the 20th centuryâs most influential and celebrated artists (Banderas the later years, and Rich, the young Picasso) on the second installment of NatGeoâs âGeniusâ seriesâ âGenius: Picasso,â premiering April 24 on the National Geographic channel. âPicasso is a universe, and a country and a persona and a planet all in his self,â Banderas told SalonTVâs D. Watkins. âHe didnât marry with anybody or anything at all. He was a very, very strong artist. Very honest in his artistry and that honesty actually in his personal life, took him to very very complicated situations with friends, with women and in dealing with his own family.â The 10-part series provides a deep meditation on Picassoâs life, his flaws and what ultimately made him one of the best artist ever. Watch the interview above to hear more on how Banderas prepared for the role and his take on immigration and his vision of America. [How Christine Lahti fights harassment](
Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor and filmmaker Christine Lahti (of âChicago Hopeâ and âThe Blacklistâ) joins Salonâs Mary Elizabeth Williams to share moments from her new book, âTrue Stories From an Unreliable Eyewitness: A Feminist Coming of Age.â This humorous and often heartbreaking assortment of interrelated personal essays chronicles Lahtiâs early career as an artist and activist, tracing her lifeâs journey from her midwestern upbringing, through close brushes with the casting couch, to her still-evolving feminist activism today. Lahti opens up on âSalon Talksâ about the sexism she encountered and often tried to challenge during her career. Despite being told by a casting director early on in her career that the only way she âcould ever make it as an actress was to sleep (her) way to the top,â Lahti says she instead became an increasingly active feminist. In the midst of the cultural awakening occurring with the MeToo and Timeâs Up movements, Lahti told Salon, âI've been dreaming about this movement my entire adult life.â Watch the video above to hear about Lahtiâs close call with a cereal commercial casting couch and check out the [full episode]( to learn why the decorated actor and feminist is optimistic for the next generation of women. [Margo Martindale of "The Americans"](
Three-time Emmy Award winner Margo Martindale joined âSalon Talksâ to discuss the indelible characters she has played in films like "Million Dollar Baby" and television shows like ["Dexter,"]( "The Good Fight," ["Sneaky Pete"]( "and ["Justified."]( And as Claudia on ["The Americans,"]( she's the KGB agent and scarf aficionado to watch out for in the show's final season. But her most unexpectedly iconic part has been as herself â or more accurately, a bank robbing, two-dimensional version of herself â as "character actress Margo Martindale" on the brilliant ["Bojack Horseman."]( It's a role she was born to play, yet one she never saw herself in. When her former sitcom co-star Will Arnett told her that he wanted her for his new animated series, she told Salonâs Mary Elizabeth Williams that she turned him down flat. But then, she recalls, "He said to me, 'You're going to come do my show⦠The part is Margo Martindale, character actress.' I said, 'I guess I have to.'" But she adds that she had one note after reading the script. "I said, 'I hate to tell you this, but the characters seem like animals.'" Watch the video above to see Martindale discuss why she likes playing people who "scare me a little bit" and what it's like to do a David Mamet play⦠for children. Tune in for SalonTV's live shows, ["Salon Talks"]( and ["Salon Stage"]( , daily at noon ET / 9 a.m. PT and 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT, streaming live on [Salon]( , [Facebook]( and [Periscope]( .
