[A must-read transgender story](
Sarah McBride is the first openly trans woman to work at the White House and became the first transgender person to speak at a national political convention with her speech at the DNC in 2016. She joined Amanda Marcotte on âSalon Talksâ to present her new memoir âTomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss, and the Fight for Trans Equality.â McBride, who is national press secretary at the Human Rights Campaign, made headlines for coming out as transgender in 2012 while serving as American Universityâs student body president. Since then, Sarah has been at the forefront of the transgender activist movement. Even in a climate where transgender bathroom bills and military bans have gained political support, McBride remains hopeful for a more inclusive future. She told Salon, âChange can not come fast enough. Every single day matters when it comes to building a world where every person can live their life to the fullest.â Check out the full episode above to hear more about McBrideâs thoughts on trans bans and how her lost love helped inspire her activism. [#MeToo brings new depth to classic play](
Twenty years ago, Eve Enslerâs landmark and award-winning female-empowerment play "The Vagina Monologues" began and sparked a global movement, "V Day,â an effort focused on ending violence against women and girls and celebrated on Valentineâs Day. "The Vagina Monologues,â which is at turns sad, disturbing, and also funny, has been translated into 48 languages and performed in 140 countries. The women who perform it all over the world feel a powerful connection to the material, including three of the actors who are performing the show in New York, Vicky Kuperman, Vanessa Hollingshead and Gina Savage. They stopped by Salon to share their personal experiences with the subject matter, including extremely personal revelations about sexual abuse. Ensler's collection of stories delve into sex, body image, genital mutilation and rape, and is the result of hundreds of interviews she did while writing the play. Savage says she hopes audiences take away this message from âThe Vagina Monologues:â "We're individuals,â she told Salon. âIf something happens to us, we should speak up then and there. No matter if you're a male or a female, the time to take action is now, in the moment, when it happens, and not be afraid to do that." To find a performance of âThe Vagina Monologuesâ in your city visit vday.org. Watch the video above to learn âmore about the show and how it continues to inspire people around the world to speak out against sexual violence.â Tune into SalonTV's live shows, ["Salon Talks"]( and ["Salon Stage"]( , daily at noon ET / 9 a.m. PT and 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT, streaming live on [Salon]( , [Facebook]( and [Periscope]( .
