Your Big Data and Social Research Roundup
[]
[ESRC](We’d be delighted if you could join us at our upcoming panel debate ‘[Putting big data to “good” use’]( being held on 6th of November at the British Academy in London as part of the [ESRC Festival of Social Science 2017](.
As we advance further into a data driven society examples of big data being used to maximise profit and cause harm have made headlines around the world. Those in favour of ushering in the “big data revolution” believe effective applications can enhance society and improve social policy, but is the skills gap in the social sciences and challenges with data access limiting the potential for big data to be put to “good” use? Our panel debate will summarise the challenges, point to examples of progress being made and address what more we, as an academic community, could be doing to better understand and utilise big data for optimum impact. The panel is being chaired by [Katie Metzler](, Head of Research Methods Innovation at SAGE, and will include the following speakers:
- [Maria Fasli, UNESCO Chair of Data Science, Director of Essex Institute of Data Analytics](
- [Slava Mikhaylov, Professor of Public Policy and Data Science at Essex and Chief Scientific Adviser to Essex County Council](
- [Jonathan Gray, Lecturer in Critical Infrastructure Studies, Kings College London & Co-founder of the Public Data Lab](
- [Ian Mulvany, Head of Product Innovation, SAGE Publishing](
