This morning’s dispatch from Paris comes via contributing writer Sarah Lorge Butler. When she’s not tracking down all the top runners and coaches after their events this week, she’s keeping her radar up on other things that make the Olympic Games truly unique. One person who has stood out to her is a volunteer welcomer near the stadium each day in her journey from the Metro to Stade de France. *** Jacques Jourdain de Thieulloy is the ultimate hype man. His volunteer position with the Olympics? He sits outside Stade de France, in the equivalent of a lifeguard chair, and welcomes fans into the stadium. In multiple languages. Runner’s World heard him speaking Spanish and, of course, French, in 30 seconds, before he easily slipped into English for a quick interview from the chair. When the Olympics aren’t in France, Jourdain de Thiulloy, 19, is a business student. For now, he’s fixed in his perch, a warmup act overlooking the athletes’ warmup track near the stadium. He loves this job, even though it gets hot sitting up there for eight-hour shifts (with a break for lunch). “It’s incredible,” he said. “I love the joy of every people, every country. It is really fun. Everyone is really happy to be here. I love the show.” *** Thanks for hyping everyone up, Jacques! Take a look at [one of Sarah’s tweets]( that shows him in action. Give her a follow if you want the latest from Stade de France. Germa is the fastest in the world this year. Then again, he was last year as well—a world record will do that for you—and was beaten by El Bakkali at the world championships. In fact, in the three most recent global championships, it’s been El Bakkali first and Girma second. Could this finally be Girma’s time? [Read More](   🇺🇸 Athlete Spotlight: Hobbs Kessler Three years ago, an 18-year-old Hobbs Kessler had just signed a professional contract when he competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials for the first time. In a few short years, the runner from Ann Arbor, Michigan, rose from local high school standout to American junior record-holder with many comparing him to legendary phenoms like Jim Ryun and Allen Webb. The 21-year-old has had an exciting start to the Olympic Games. He ran a PR in Tuesday’s 1500-meter final, placing 5th overall in that highly-anticipated race. And on what he said was just three hours of sleep, came back on Wednesday morning and advanced out of his 800-meter heat. [Read More](   ⁉ Did You Know? In Paris, when athletes make it onto the podium after finishing in the top three in an Olympic event, they aren’t just given gold, silver, or bronze medals—presenters are giving the medalists a mysterious box.
