If you have photographed the subject yourself, you will likely have several photos from which to choose. Color photos give better information about the palette you should use, but black and white photos are fine to work from, too. ...Select a photograph that has most of the following attributes: - Provides excellent detail of the torso and head, a good reproduceable likeness. - Is strongly lit so that there is a range of values. A photo taken in diffuse light, as on a cloudy day, can be rather flat, with few contrasting lights and darks. This makes the face more challenging to hook as well as less interesting to look at. - Provides some interest in pose or position of head. - Makes it possible to discern all features clearly, even if they are in shadow. You do not want to guess the angle and placement of a feature that is obscured in deep shadow. (I’ve tried it. But only once.) - Shows a quirk of expression or an accessory that is recognizably that person—a well-worn cap or rakish scarf. In my case, purple-framed, round-lensed eyeglasses are an important part of my identity. I joke that if my glasses were put on a tree trunk, people would think it was me!
