Design Like an Artist: Using Inspiration from Your Favorite Artists for Rug Designs When I sat down to design a Vogue cover, I thought back to the magazine’s beginnings, several issues a month. I thought about not only the content and subject matter, but also the function of a magazine: to sell. Taking readers through the year and selling every season, every red-letter day, every holiday, was important to maximize sales. Essentially, the covers function as a calendar, with flowering cherry blossoms and butterflies in the spring, floppy sun hats and tropical heat waves in the summer, falling leaves and checkered capes in the autumn, fur collars and fat snowflakes in the winter. I realized that representing not only a time of day and a place but also a season was of timely importance during this era of cover art. I feel like during that time people were just more in step with each other, the sense of community was deeper, and the happiness of sharing holidays was more universal in a public sense. My favorite time of year is autumn. It’s the time when the heat of summer releases its sweaty grip and Mother Nature begins putting on a show; swishing her colorful robes around all of New England. Everything starts to smell like fireplaces and maple, and the kids are secretly starting their Christmas lists—just like I was starting to consult the giant Sears catalog at their age. I created a drawing of a fashionable boyish girl leaning against a tree in an argyle dress, wistfully watching the first leaves of autumn fluttering by. She seems to be sighing, relaxing, watching the colorful fanfare of theatrical leaves falling down like a loose hem. I tried to capture the languid laziness of a vintage Vogue but also the excitement of celebrating the seasons. I completed this pattern on the first day of spring and it already had me dreaming of those colorful autumn afternoons. ~Deana David.
