[Kris Bryant] and [Anthony Rizzo] have (deservedly) received most of the attention among the Cubs’ position players this season, but man, is [Addison Russell] some kind of hot right now. Russell continued his home run binge on Tuesday in the Cubs’ victory over the Padres, slugging a two-run shot while also adding a double. That gives the young shortstop seven dingers over his last 13 games and a career-high 19 for the season. He’s batting .313 with 15 RBI over that stretch. While his batting line for the season is still a rather pedestrian .251/.336/.445, Russell has given fantasy owners plenty of category juice with his 19 homers and 82 RBI, putting him on pace for a 25-homer, 106-RBI season. He leads all National League shortstops and trails only [Carlos Correa] at the position with the 82 ribbies. Even in a year that’s been shockingly good for shortstop production, what Russell is doing as a 22-year-old cannot be overlooked. Those that own him in dynasty leagues are awfully lucky, as he figures to only get better and better. When Broxton was optioned back to Triple-A Colorado Springs on July 1, he was sitting on an ugly .125/.253/.188 batting line across 75 plate appearances in his multiple stints with the big club. Since returning on July 26, the 26-year-old is hitting a blistering .329 with five home runs and 10 stolen bases over 26 games, solidifying himself as the Brewers’ everyday center fielder. Broxton averaged 13 home runs and 23 stolen bases per season from 2012-15 in the minors, and he’s batted .287/.362/.562 with eight homers and 18 steals in 2016 at Triple-A. Between the majors and minors, he’s totaled 14 bombs and 35 stolen bases over 102 games. That’s not a bad little bundle of power and speed, and Broxton also has a decent eye at the plate, helping to hold up his on-base percentage even if his average might lag behind a bit. Broxton does swing and miss a lot. It’s certainly possible that he’ll encounter more bumps in the road as he did earlier this season. However, fantasy owners are mostly looking for counting stats at this point in the year, and Broxton might be an underrated source for them down the stretch. The speedy outfielder is currently a free agent in 70 percent of Yahoo leagues. Street Set for Surgery It’s been an awful season for veteran closer [Huston Street]. That season is mercifully come to an end. Out all of August with a sore right knee, Street had the knee re-evaluated in Texas on Tuesday, and the decision for him to have season-ending arthroscopic surgery [has been made]. A specific timetable for the reliever isn’t known at this time, but it’s not expected to affect his availability for the start of next season. Street, 33, posted an ugly 6.45 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 14/12 K/BB ratio over 22 1/3 innings for the Angels this season. He blew three of 12 save opportunities. With [Cam Bedrosian] also on the disabled list with flexor tendinitis in the right middle finger, [Fernando Salas] has been serving as the Halos’ closer for the past couple weeks. Bedrosian is throwing again, though, and looks to be in line to return at the beginning of September. He should be given a shot to reclaim the ninth-inning job. Street is under contract for $9 million next season, with the Angels holding a $10 million club option on him for 2018. He posted a 2.29 ERA from 2014-15 and saved 40+ games each of those seasons, so the veteran reliever figures to get another shot to close in 2017 despite his woeful 2016, provided he’s healthy. However, Bedrosian has been seen by some as the club’s closer of the future for a while, and he could have a chance to stake claim to the job with a strong final month of the season.
