The Angels announced Tuesday that [Shohei Ohtani]( will undergo Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery next week, shortly after the conclusion of the 2018 regular season. The procedure will be performed by Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.
This always seemed like the probable end result when Ohtani was diagnosed with new damage to the UCL in his right elbow on September 5. But the 24-year-old two-way star wanted to stay active as the Angels’ regular designated hitter through the end of the team’s 2018 schedule -- a role he has excelled at in his first major league season.
Ohtani hit an RBI single and scored a run in the Angels’ win over the Rangers on Tuesday night in Anaheim and is batting .280/.360/.559 with 21 home runs, 20 doubles, and 56 RBI over his first 100 major league games, only 78 of which he started. He has also stolen nine bases and scored 56 runs.
Remember [those questions]( about whether Ohtani would ever be a high-impact MLB hitter? Heh.
He won’t pitch again until 2020, but there is speculation that Ohtani might be able to serve as the Angels’ primary DH throughout the 2019 season while rehabbing his right arm. Angels manager [Mike Scioscia]( [cautioned Tuesday]( that there are “too many variables” to know for sure at this point whether he will be able to pull that off, but [Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports]( spoke to four different doctors familiar with the Tommy John procedure who believe that Ohtani, as a left-handed hitter and right-handed thrower, probably could indeed do it.
With a strict focus on developing the offensive side of his game, Ohtani could potentially be even more productive as a hitter in his second MLB season. And we’d like to think he might try to steal a lot more bases.
Osuna Assault Charge Dropped
The assault charge against [Roberto Osuna](, which resulted in his arrest in Toronto back in May and culminated in a 75-game suspension under MLB’s domestic violence policy, was officially withdrawn by a Canadian court on Tuesday.
Osuna agreed to a peace bond and must comply with the conditions of that bond for one year or face criminal charges. Those conditions include the continuation of counseling and zero contact with his accuser, who lives in Mexico and refused to travel back to Toronto to testify in the case.
"I am pleased and relieved by today's court decision," Osuna said [in a statement released to the media](. "Now I can begin to put these allegations behind me and focus on baseball. I want to thank my family, teammates and fans for believing in me. I am grateful to the Astros for providing me with the opportunity to play baseball and compete for a World Series championship.”
Houston acquired the 23-year-old right-hander from the Blue Jays on July 30, a few days before his suspension was set to conclude, and he has registered a 2.08 ERA and 19/3 K/BB ratio in 21 2/3 innings with his new team, converting 11 saves in 11 opportunities. He officially took over as the Astros’ primary closer at the end of August, with [Hector Rondon]( shifting into more of a setup role.
Osuna was booed heavily in his first appearance back at Toronto’s Rogers Centre on Monday night as he worked a scoreless ninth inning to ice a 5-3 victory for the Astros. He got booed again Tuesday while tossing another scoreless frame -- needing just six pitches -- as Houston notched its 100th win of the season.
Vizcaino Back In The Ninth
In more positive closer news, depending on your perspective of the Osuna matter …
MLB.com’s Mark Bowman [tweeted Tuesday]( that [Arodys Vizcaino]( is likely to serve as the Braves’ primary ninth-inning man “the rest of the way,” which would presumably include the postseason.
Vizcaino has not worked on back-to-back days since returning from a rather serious shoulder injury on September 14, but the reins are apparently off as the Braves prepare for what they hope will be a deep playoff run. The 27-year-old right-hander worked a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning in a non-save situation Tuesday night at Citi Field as Atlanta earned a 7-3 victory over the Mets. He’s been terrific this season when healthy, with a 1.91 ERA and 40/13 K/BB ratio over 37 2/3 frames.
[A.J. Minter]( got the majority of the save opportunities while Vizcaino was sidelined for a two-month stretch, but he has allowed seven earned runs on 15 hits and six walks over his last 11 innings.
