Those in power preparing for trouble ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ Well, it's official... some at the Fed are projecting a recession. According to recently released minutes from the Federal Reserve's March 21-22 meeting, staff members at the central bank projected a "mild recession starting later this year, with a recovery over the subsequent two years." The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank especially spooked them. "Historical recessions related to financial market problems tend to be more severe and persistent than average recessions," according to the staff. The IMF is also sounding gloomy. "A hard landing - particularly for advanced economies - has become a much larger risk," said a new report from the International Monetary Fund. "The fog around the world economic outlook has thickened." Don't get me wrong, at least one more interest rate increase from the Fed is almost a certainty. But there's a glimmer of hope now. Don't get complacent. The threats faced are still existential. "We're not over bank failures, but depositors haven't had a crisis," he said. "Banks go bust. But depositors aren't going to be hurt." Investors on the other hand... - IMF Warns Against Complacency With American Economy - First managing director Gita Gopinath of the International Monetary Fund argued that softening signs of inflation show that "we could avoid a recession." However, she said a new downturn is "within the realm of possibilities."
