Those in power preparing for trouble

According to recently released minutes from the Federal Reserve's March 21-22 meeting, staff members at the central bank projected a "mild recession starting later this year, with a recovery over the subsequent two years." The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank especially spooked them.
"Historical recessions related to financial market problems tend to be more severe and persistent than average recessions," according to the staff. The IMF is also sounding gloomy.
"A hard landing - particularly for advanced economies - has become a much larger risk," said a new report from the International Monetary Fund. "The fog around the world economic outlook has thickened." The irony is that this comes after the new figures from the Consumer Price Index for March show inflation is actually falling more quickly than expected.
In truth, this is exactly what we were looking for. The global economy desperately needed a break - a break from more interest rate increases. Don't get me wrong, at least one more interest rate increase from the Fed is almost a certainty. But there's a glimmer of hope now. Don't get complacent. The threats faced are still existential.
