Rising expectations for even higher interest rates

The market was down BIG yesterday not because things are bad, but because they are too good. Recent reports indicated wage and job growth were higher than expected in November. That means the Fed could be looking to hike rates by 0.75 basis points again. The decision will come next week. Many investors have long expected a half-point rate hike, but it's starting to look like we will get something greater. In fairness, Chairman Jerome Powell has previously suggested that the Fed was going to slow down the pace of hikes.
"If you're waiting for actual evidence that inflation is coming down, it's very difficult not to over-tighten," he said. "We think that slowing down at this point is a good way to balance the risks." But remember, the Fed is trying to bring inflation down to 2% - which sounds insanely optimistic. It may be looking for a reason to stick to hawkish policies, a reason like the latest jobs and wage reports. That could be enough to remain with 0.75 bps hikes. And that will impose a cost. Even slowing the pace of rate hikes at this point won't eliminate that cost. A half point raise will bring interest rates to the highest point since December 2007. Current interest rates are already putting massive pressure on the housing market. Homes are remaining on the market for longer and real estate companies are scrambling. A new poll from LendingTree found more than 40% of Americans from ages 18 to 76 thought the housing market will "crash" within the next year. A crash like this creates opportunities as well as danger. We could see some incredible bargains both in stocks as well as property. But that's only something we can act on if we have short-term capital. Stay connected with all our resources so you can have the money to act on these historic opportunities.
