Every economy has at least an element of central command. You can't ignore the "Top Down" factors that determine winners and losers. It may not be fair - but who said life is fair?
Three quick examples...
First is something we don't think of as purely political. That's the attempt by the Federal Reserve to manage inflation with interest rate hikes. This in itself represents a massive intervention in the market, something that artificially boosts some firms and investors while harming others. Ask anyone who had a variable rate mortgage. Second, look at Elon Musk. The man says he is going to buy Twitter. He tries to get out of it, but it looks like he is failing. All of a sudden, you have Twitter reporting he's under federal investigation... and Musk suddenly says that Starlink will continue to provide free Internet to Ukraine even though they can't afford it. Is there some kind of pressure taking place behind the scenes?
Finally, consider President Joe Biden's moves on semiconductors in China.
That's forcing desperate choices not just on companies but on skilled workers - who may be forced to choose between their citizenship and their job. Eventually, these factors work their way into the technical indicators - but you always want an awareness of the big picture. It makes it easier to identify the specific patterns so you can score win after win after win. Let's start again this morning. Keep Moving, WORD ON THE STREET Thiel Fleeing US?, Doomer Dimon Warns Us All, Biden Hits China - "I Was Expecting Not To Expect Something So It Doesn't Count" - The crash in British bonds and the crisis in pension funds may just be the first in a list of surprises heading our way, according to JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon. "My experience in life has been when you have things like what we're going through today, there are going to be other surprises," he said. While he said the American system is "extraordinarily strong," the Fed's interest rate hikes and reforms to its balance sheet are forcing other countries to make tough choices and harming their own battles against inflation. - Paypal Founder Reportedly Seeking Maltese Citizenship - Paypal founder and venture capitalist Peter Thiel is reportedly seeking Maltese citizenship, according to a report from The New York Times. He's just one of many wealthy Americans who are seeking a second passport in recent years. Malta has a "golden passport" program that allows the wealthy to obtain a passport (and therefore access to the EU) for an investment of at least 750,000 euros to the national development fund. If there's trouble ahead, best to flee to a historic stronghold - Chip Wars - The Biden Administration announced export controls on certain kinds of chips, essentially kneecapping the entire Chinese chip industry. It's also going to deal a heavy blow to American companies heavily invested in China. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao (heh) Ning said the restrictions will hurt American companies as well as Chinese ones and "deal a blow to global industrial and supply chains and world economic recovery."  - Musk Decides To "Hell With It," We'll Do It Live - After saying SpaceX couldn't afford to keep providing Starlink Internet to Ukraine, Elon Musk is tired of the pushback. "The hell with it... even though Starlink is still losing money & other companies are getting billions of taxpayer $, we'll just keep funding Ukraine govt for free." One can't but wonder if a man in a dark black suit gave him a talking to. "The comments in this thread are a conspiracy theorist's wet dream," Musk added. HOT SPOTS: What's Going on in Geopolitics - Chinese Tell Citizens To Leave Ukraine - Do they know something we don't? The Chinese government has reportedly told all its citizens in Kyiv to leave as soon as possible. The timing is interesting because it coincides with other Russian allies telling their citizens to split - including Serbia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan, among others. A concentration of Russian forces in Belarus, as well as the Belarussian army itself, raises the possibility of a strike from the north at Kyiv while Russian reinforcements try to hold on in Kherson and push the advance in Donetsk. - Russian Soldiers Killed By "Terrorist" Attack – Two natives of Tajikistan reportedly opened fire at a training range for Russian soldiers, killing almost a dozen and wounding many more. The attackers were killed at the scene. The Russian government called it a terrorist attack, but it's another sign that the Russian government's "partial mobilization" is straining Vladimir Putin's regime's ability to keep control. - War. War Never Changes. - Cyberattacks on Poland and Ukraine are being reported by Microsoft, raising concerns that pro-Russian hackers are taking down transportation and logistics networks. The new ransomware, "Prestige," is a new type of attack that hasn't yet been traced to any particular group and Microsoft is scrambling to respond. CUTTING EDGE: What[']( Happening In Tech - Metaverse Is Getting Legs - So we're still doing this, huh? Meta Platform's metaverse is no longer populated by floating torsos and arms. Now avatars in the virtual world are getting legs. (Cough). Ok, I don't know why anyone would be too excited about this... but Zuckerberg seems really committed to all this. And if the metaverse does eventually catch on with improving technology, he's determined to make sure META has a dominant position.  This may seem stupid now, but let's check back in a few years. - Get You A Girl Who Backs You Like Cathie Wood Does Elon – Cathie Wood of Ark Invest is not having a great year... tech has been slaughtered and the pandemic-era star is suffering. However, she's still backing Elon Musk and his attempted takeover of Twitter. "I'm kind of excited to see what Elon will do," she said. Musk has referred vaguely to turning TWTR into part of "X," a universal app, but no one fully knows what that means - perhaps not even Musk himself. - Another Apple Store Unionizes - ♫ Which side are you on? ♫  Apple workers at the Penn Square store in Oklahoma City are unionizing. This is the second Apple store that's joined the trend, but it may not be the last. Key to the drive is President Joe Biden's support as well as a favorable National Labor Relations Board.  President Biden said he was "proud of" Apple workers who had unionized in Maryland; he likely feels the same about Oklahoma FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION "One tool I use for day trading has a proven track record of winning about 80% of the time.
