Premarket action Friday morning is largely random following big earnings reports from Apple and Amazon after the close Thursday… [I have a couple of big concerns right now]( and the biggest is with implied volatility. We’re about three-quarters of the way through earnings season, which means trading is getting closer to normal. Algos have been bearish, especially in the Utilities sector (tracked by the XLU ETF). Why? Utilities and bonds compete for yield. And when Treasurys (TLT) are being sold off, that’s because interest rates are higher. When rates are higher, investors tend to flee Utilities stocks — because they’re buying them for dividends since these aren’t high-flying names that deliver big gains. When interest rates go lower, Utilities stocks are more attractive. So the bond market and Utilities have been under major pressure this week.
