And Lockheed Martin wants in on the space race [Disclosures]( "So if Apple makes a car, do I need a new charging dongle?" Yesterday’s Market Moves Dow Jones 30,216 (+0.12%) S&P 500 3,695 (-0.39%) Nasdaq 12,743 (-0.10%) Bitcoin $22,892 (-2.66%) Dow Jones 30,216 (+0.12%) S&P 500 3,695 (-0.39%) Nasdaq 12,743 (-0.10%) Bitcoin $22,892 (-2.66%) Hey Snackers, Not sure yet if we're impressed with this or not: PayPal is hosting a [29-hour]( virtual worldwide holiday party (magic show included). Tesla joined the S&P 500 index, and the House passed a 2nd stimulus bill — but a concerning new strain of COVID-19 in the UK was enough to knock stocks down. Jolt Apple's car project is reportedly back on (ETA 2024) You got iOS jumper cables?... Someone at [Apple]( does. Tim Cook is reportedly [building]( a ridiculously techy personal automobile, according to Reuters. It's a shocker, because Apple's first car attempt, "Project Titan" (bold name), began in 2014 and crashed in 2019. Here's the update: - When can iDrive?: Apple's reportedly targeting 2024. - What's so special about it?: The battery. Apple's game-changing juice will last longer and charge faster. - Who builds it: Not Apple. Just like iPhones, which are made by Chinese manufacturing giant Foxconn, Apple would likely outsource manufacturing (TBD to who). Apple's a $2T company... so rumors of an Apple car in four years didn't budge the stock. But Apple's apparently going to buy Lidar sensors to make this thing self-driving. This would be a dream deal for Lidar companies [Velodyne]( and [Luminar]( — their stocks [jumped]( 23% and 27% as investors fantasized about which could get Apple's rose. THE TAKEAWAY Car-making measures time in years... Apple is the richest company in the world, with more cash on hand than many countries. But the average car includes [30K]( parts. Even if Apple's magically simple design can cut that in half, this is more complex than adding an 8th camera to an iPhone 14. It's usually five to 10 years between starting a car design and getting it mass produced for the road. Never forget: It took Tesla 17 years to find its first profit. What else we're Snackin' - [ZZZZ]( Ladies-first dating app Bumble files confidentially to IPO, reportedly seeking a valuation of $6B to $8B. - [Gravity]( Aerospace icon [Lockheed Martin]( buys a rocket company for $4.6B to compete with billionaires Musk and Bezos. - [Lemon]( [Tesla]( stock goes reverse, falling 6% on its 1st day in the S&P 500 index (despite expectations of the opposite). - [Vaccine]( The European Union approves [Pfizer's]( Covid vaccine. - [Name]( [Constellation Brands]( Corona beer wasn't harmed by its unfortunate name — sales "held steady" through the pandemic. The Snacks Daily Podcast The Snacks pod hosts are on vacation, but just dropped a "Best of Snacks 2020" album: Our 3 favorite Snacks Daily podcast stories from the worst year yet. Taste our 15-minute pod on [Apple]( or [Spotify](. Snack Fact Of the Day [If you join a gym in January, there's a 4% chance you'll quit by the end of the month, a 14% chance you're done by February, and an 80% chance you'll end it within 5 months]( Tuesday - Earnings from [CarMax]( and [Neogen]( Disclosure: Authors of this Snacks own stock in Apple.
