This day became known as Juneteenth. Today, we honor Juneteenth, the newest federal holiday and a day that has a long history of celebration in the African American community. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of all enslaved African Americans and is a day to reflect on the history of slavery and celebrate freedom and independence.
