Educator & Archaeologist The Cyclades, the group of islands that form a circle (kyklos) around the sacred island of Delos ,where Apollo was born, have been central in the Greek psyche since antiquity. Located in central Aegean Sea, this group of islands have played a significant role in Greeceâs rich history. The extreme weather conditions and the historical circumstances urged the local builders to develop a folk architecture with unique architectural features: settlements with little alleys, cubistic whitewashed houses and churches with blue domes. With island-studded azure waters as a backdrop, the beauty of the islands inspired the modernist movement in architecture. In the simple geometric forms, their plasticity and moderation, the famous Swiss-French architect, Le Corbusier found the archetypes of modern architecture. In this lecture we will explore how the diverse climatic conditions and the historical circumstances gave birth to the unique Cycladic architecture and shaped its people. Monday, July 19, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. (ET) / 9:00 a.m. (PT) [Located in: ]Online [Vermontâs Heart and Sustainable Soul]( With Megan Epler Wood
Educator & Sustainability Expert In the first of a 'Sustainability of Place' series, Megan Epler Wood explores the earliest stories of beautiful Windham County where the historic monument villages of Newfane and Grafton charted a path which created a paradise of both architecture and the arts. Once the railroad came in, Newfane and its neighboring village Grafton began to attract famous writers such as Rudyard Kipling as early as the 1890s, and a cast of famous politicians including Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, and Woodrow Wilson. This episode will also explore how central Vermont became an artistâs retreat and retains an extraordinary devotion to the arts of place. This âcenteredâ piece of Vermontâs historical soul maintains a signature quest to keep commerce and the arts local and of the highest standards - to allow local people to both prosper and live in harmony with their place. This is the definition of sustainable development and certainly makes Vermont one of the more sustainable places to visit in the world.
