Cutting back on food waste doesn't have to be difficult. [Someone pushing a shopping cart in a grocery store.] Photo by Getty Images / BjelicaS I’M THE PROBLEM, IT’S ME OK, I’ll admit it: I’m the person who grocery shops while hungry. And even though I make a detailed list, I tend to abandon it to let my stomach guide me through the aisles. This is how I end up discovering [beef jerky I actually like]( and bringing home yet [another jar of pasta sauce]( we don’t need. (It's a different flavor, so it doesn't count, right?) One of my goals for the rest of the year is to reduce the amount of wasted food in my household, starting with eating a snack before I head out the door so that I don’t pick up as many extra food items. If you’ve already mastered this issue, our experts have some additional suggestions for reducing your food waste. We’re in this together, folks! [A vacuum sealer sealing a piece of cooked chicken] Photo by FoodSaver / Reviewed Cut back on your food waste Every year, an estimated 30% to 40% of America’s food supply, which is more than 100 billion pounds, goes to waste, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. This can increase food insecurity and have a negative impact on the environment. If you want to decrease your contribution to this number, we have a couple of suggestions. The most obvious answer to this is to plan what you need to grab at the grocery store ahead of time and use up what you already have at home before buying more. You can increase your food’s shelf life by properly storing it in [high-quality containers]( and in your refrigerator’s crisper drawers. If you don’t care how pretty your veggies are, try [Misfits Market]( which ships imperfect (but perfectly usable) produce right to your door. Don’t forget to use your freezer to its fullest extent—we love [this vacuum sealer]( to avoid freezer burn. Find more tips from our experts [right here](.
