Behind the scenes in our lab. Welcome to Testing Tuesday, a new feature of your regular Reviewed newsletter. Once a month, our lab team will take you behind the scenes for a look at the testing behind our recommendations. It's going to be very nerdy and very fun. --------------------------------------------------------------- In the running for best socks... Most people know that you should never go cheap on anything that connects you to the ground. Bad shoes will give you aching feet and knock-off tires might lead you to disaster. However, socks are often overlooked in that list. A lot of us are looking for ways to get back into shape. That’s why we decided to lab test a bunch of running socks to see which ones provided the best moisture wicking and breathability. You can check out our top picks for the best running socks in [our buying guide](. Jonathan Chan Senior Manager, Lab Operations By the numbers We chose the best running socks after: - Running 60 miles - Measuring 48 dimensions - Watching wicking tests for 240 minutes How we tested running socks Our lab testing focused on wicking and breathability. To test moisture wicking, we cut the testing socks into thin strips and then hung them over a tray filled with colored water. We measure how far the liquid traveled up the fabric over a certain amount of time. We also tested the breathability of each pair of socks. To do this, we stretched the socks over a petri dish filled with a chemical that changes color when in the presence of moisture. We placed the Petri dishes in a sealed container with some water. By gauging how much moisture permeated the fabric, we can assess how breathable each sock was.
