Take action with IRC on behalf of asylum seekers today. [International Rescue Committee logo.]( {NAME}, I'll cut to the chase: We need your help to tell the Biden administration to uphold their commitments to support asylum seekers. [Please join me in taking action now »]( Here's the situation: Title 42 ends this [Thursday,]( but asylum seekers remain at risk. Established under the Trump administration, the Title 42 policy has been used to justify the expulsion of nearly three million people under the pretext of public health. For almost three years, this policy has prevented asylum seekers from exercising their right to seek protection under U.S. and international law, putting thousands of vulnerable individuals and families in harm's way. The end of Title 42 is a welcome, but long overdue action to restore an orderly, humane asylum process. What happens next: The Biden administration recently announced a new proposal that may continue to bar thousands of people from seeking asylum in the U.S.: Anyone who has not applied for asylum while passing through a third country or who did not manage to make an appointment to seek asylum at a southern border port of entry through a smartphone app, with few exceptions, [would be barred from seeking asylum.]( What this means: {NAME}, this new rule would effectively re-institute another Trump-era infringement on the right to seek asylum: the transit ban. This new rule, which would be in effect for two years, violates U.S. law and international obligations, which guarantee the legal right to seek asylum at or after crossing the border and would undermine respect for refugee protections globally. [{NAME} join me in telling the Biden administration to uphold their commitments to support asylum seekers »]( Similar to Title 42, these rules will deprive thousands of people with legitimate claims of the ability to seek and obtain asylum in the U.S. People with valid asylum claims will be unfairly turned away and returned to dangerous situations. The limited temporary pathways to safety the U.S. is offering will leave people in legal limbo without a path to permanent residency or citizenship and ineligible for family reunification. This means that spouses and children may be stranded in danger abroad, and families will be kept apart. Asylum seekers should not be punished and barred from seeking asylum for crossing borders to seek safety. [Please, join me in taking action now. »]( [TAKE ACTION »]( The U.S. must respect the right to refugee protection as established by domestic and international law for all those who seek safety from harm, violence and persecution. President Biden must uphold his promise to restore safety for asylum seekers and rebuild a humane asylum system that is [fair, orderly and efficient.]( [TAKE ACTION »]( Sincerely, Melinda Melinda Frimpong Senior Officer, Advocacy & Policy International Rescue Committee The International Rescue Committee | [Rescue.org]( 122 East 42nd Street, New York, New York 10168-1289 USA To ensure future delivery of IRC e-mails, please add our reply address updates@rescue.org to your Address Book.
