Hi {NAME}, I don't think we've met before, but my name is Sally Anyanga. I'm a global communications officer with the IRC, where I cover conflict and crisis throughout East Africa. Part of my job is to keep supporters like you up-to-date with global happenings in East Africa, especially in times of crisis. I'm personally reaching out to you today to brief you with what's happening in Sudan, and how the IRC is responding. The situation is escalating and we are ramping up our efforts. Fighting recently broke out in Khartoum, Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), rival factions of the country's military. The clashes have led to the deaths of 420 people and left over 3,500 injured. We at the IRC strongly condemn and are actively calling for an end to the ongoing fighting. The IRC is on the ground in Sudan, and while we have temporarily stalled our efforts in most of the country due to the flighting. We are still operating in Tunaydbah in Eastern Sudan where we continue to provide services to the refugee population.and in Blue Nile where IRC provides life saving activities to internally displaced and vulnerable host communities. We are also actively assisting the more than 20,000 people (and counting) trying to flee into Chad, Sudan's neighboring country. We have a full team in Chad providing health services as well as water, sanitation, hygiene and protection services, particularly for women and girls. As the situation escalates, we are aware that the conflict impacts our ability to respond to the urgent needs facing those in Sudan. Kurt Tjossem, the IRC's vice president in East Africa, puts it succinctly: "Conflict has disrupted humanitarian action in Sudan where over a third of the population, an estimated 15 million people including refugees, are experiencing acute food insecurity," [10-year old Mirkha playing football with his best friend Hafton and some other children in Tunaydbah camp, Sudan. ](

Before the recent fighting, Sudan was already facing a humanitarian crisis, with extreme weather shocks, social and political unrest and rising food prices driving poverty, hunger and displacement. Across the country, around 2.4 million people are currently displaced due to flooding and conflict. In Sudan, the IRC supports people impacted by conflict and crisis, including women, children, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and refugees. We provide an integrated health, nutrition and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) program. The ongoing clashes and military checkpoints are making it extremely difficult for people who need medical care or other support right now. But we are doing everything we can to assist those already in need prior to this recent conflict. The IRC is closely monitoring the situation in Sudan and urging a ceasefire between clashing forces. As soon as we're able to reach children and families safely, we will resume our crisis response. [I hope you'll learn more and donate to support the IRC's life-changing work in Sudan and worldwide.]( [LEARN MORE HERE »]( [RUSH A GIFT »](
