Breaking news: Famine conditions in Northern Darfur >> [International Rescue Committee logo.]( [A child sits in their parents' lap while being checked with an arm circumference tape to identify malnutrition. The tape is green, signifying the child is not currently at risk.]( {NAME} – One year of conflict in Sudan has led to a dire humanitarian crisis and children need [your immediate action.]( I hope you'll join me in urging Congress to take action to prevent mass starvation in Sudan and stop the growing catastrophe: [TAKE ACTION »]( Since the start of the conflict in April 2023, around 12 million people have been displaced, making Sudan the country with the largest number of displaced people and the largest child displacement crisis in the world. These levels of displacement are also exacerbated by extreme levels of food insecurity. Sudan is one of the worst food insecurity emergencies in the world, with over half the country experiencing extreme levels of food insecurity. As we shared on Monday, intense fighting in Sudan has driven the Zamzam internally displaced persons camp in Northern Darfur—host to half a million displaced people—into famine conditions. This means at least one in five households in this area face an extreme lack of food, with little to no options to feed themselves. {NAME}, children are at highest risk. The U.N. has warned that 222,000 children could die of malnutrition in Sudan in the coming months. It only takes two minutes to take action today: [TAKE ACTION »]( It's so much more than just being hungry. Malnutrition—the most dangerous and deadly form of extreme hunger—can lead to a lifetime of consequences for children, including stunted growth, impaired cognitive skills and weaker immune systems. No parent wants that for their child, or to watch them rapidly losing weight and wonder if they'll be able to get care before it's too late. [{NAME}, IRC supporters just like yourself have taken action time and time again to advocate on behalf of families in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan and across the world. I hope you'll join these steadfast supporters in their advocacy this time.]( The IRC is on the ground in Sudan right now, scaling up our capacity and expanding our delivery of humanitarian services. But, the only way to address the growing humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan and prevent large-scale death from a potential famine is an immediate ceasefire, a massive scale-up in humanitarian aid and a new diplomatic process to secure a resolution to the conflict. [This process can only start by raising your voice on the growing humanitarian catastrophe to Congress urging them to act. I hope you'll join me.]( — Melinda @ IRC The International Rescue Committee | [Rescue.org]( 122 East 42nd Street, New York, New York 10168-1289 USA To ensure future delivery of IRC e-mails, please add our reply address updates@rescue.org to your Address Book.
