But I used to work for the teachers unions. [AFC Valeria Gurr]( [WATCH MY RECENT INTERVIEW]( How did I go from the teachers unions to school choice? Let me tell you my story. As a first-generation Chilean American, I came to the United States seeking endless opportunities. I was from a disadvantaged and not well-connected family, which means I grew up in the one-size-fits-all public school system. My education suffered as a result. I struggled in large classroom settings, was often bullied, and found myself stuck in an education system that didn't work for me because of our financial situation. I realized my story was not uncommon and recognized that the surest way to attain the American Dream is to gain access to a good education. I thought the best way to help fix the education system and the next generation of students attain the American Dream was by working for organizations that support education and teachers. But, I quickly learned that this teachers union didn’t have the best interests of students or even teachers in mind. They seemed more concerned with money and maintaining the status quo of the broken system. That’s when I knew if I was going to make a difference, I had to make a change. I founded the Federación Americana Para Los Niños, which brings information about school choice to Hispanic communities and joined the American Federation for Children as a Senior Fellow. After leaving the teachers union and joining the school choice revolution, I never looked back. [Friend, now I’m asking YOU to join the school choice revolution by pledging a donation of $20.23 or an amount of your choice today ]( [JOIN THE SCHOOL CHOICE REVOLUTION: $20.23]( Thank you, Valeria Gurr Senior Fellow American Federation for Children Paid for by American Federation for Children Contributions or gifts to the American Federation of Children are not tax deductible as charitable contributions.
