Just days after the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion she celebrated her twentieth birthday in a Cuban prison cell. My grandfather, who was also imprisoned, would lay awake on the floor of his cell at night, trying to block out the screams of prisoner executions. This was life during Fidel Castro's Communist crackdown. Weapons were confiscated. Property was seized. Religion banned. Entire families were ripped apart and many were sent to prison. Thousands of political dissidents were murdered under the cover of night. Eventually they would escape to America, where she would go on to marry my late father (a Vietnam veteran) and raise their four children in peace and freedom. Today, my mother inspires in me a deep love and appreciation for America. Because when a murderous regime took over her homeland and turned on its people, she was so thankful she had somewhere to go... But now that "somewhere" – our United States of America – feels like it's being forced down a very dangerous path... The path to socialism.
