[Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi Heads to Wayanad After Violent Protests Over Man-Animal Conflicts] [Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi Heads to Wayanad After Violent Protests Over Man-Animal Conflicts]( Maine State Police Under Fire for Delay in Locating Mass Shooter's Body After Standoff AUGUSTA, Maine - The Maine State Police have defended their handling of the search for a gunman responsible for the state's deadliest shooting, which left 18 people dead at a bowling alley and bar. According to State Police Chief Col. Bill Ross, the search for the shooter, Robert Card, was "extremely challenging" due to the two separate locations involved and the intense search that followed. The police faced criticism for taking two days to find Card's body, as they quickly identified him as the shooter and found his car. Major Lucas Hare explained to a panel investigating the shooting that they delayed a search of the woods surrounding Card's abandoned car due to concerns that he, as a former Army reservist, might have night-vision capabilities or a thermal gun scope. Additionally, the decision was made to wait for a SWAT team due to the potential dangers officers might face in the dark woods. The search was further complicated by other factors, including exhaustion of police vehicles diminishing the shooter's scent, the lack of a heat signature found by an overhead helicopter, and even confusion over Card's cellphone signal being traced to his home, leading to a temporary belief that he might be there. During the two-day search, police investigated numerous leads and tips, ultimately finding Card's body in the back of a tractor-trailer in a recycling center parking lot during a third search. The commission assembled by Democratic Gov. Janet Mills and Attorney General Aaron Frey is working to determine if anything could have been done under existing law to prevent the tragedy and whether changes are needed to prevent future mass shootings. In addition to the search challenges, it was disclosed that Card had been showing signs of deteriorating mental health in the months leading up to the shooting. This included multiple warnings from relatives and fellow reservists about his increasingly paranoid behavior and access to firearms. The state's chief medical examiner concluded that Card "likely" died eight to 12 hours before the discovery of his body, indicating that he remained alive during much of the search. Even more unsettling, the police recovered Card's cellphone, which had a note dated three days before the shooting, in which Card expressed having had "enough" and his training to "hurt people." The case highlights the difficulty faced by law enforcement in dealing with individuals showing signs of potential danger due to deteriorating mental health. The tragedy also raises the question of whether authorities could have intervened to prevent the mass shooting, given the warnings and signs exhibited by the gunman.
