[Tragedy in Sydney: Man Faces Murder Charges in Fatal Domestic Violence Incident] [Tragedy in Sydney: Man Faces Murder Charges in Fatal Domestic Violence Incident]( Long Beach Man Sentenced to 28 Years for Role in Fatal Shooting of Innocent Mother at Taco Truck Long Beach, CA - A tragic case from Long Beach reached a sentencing verdict early this week as Jacquise Wright, one of the men convicted in the deadly shooting of Alejandra Martinez, an innocent bystander, received a 28 years to life sentence in state prison. The incident, which unfolded near a taco truck in December 2020, has been characterized by authorities as gang-related. At 34, Wright, a local resident, faced first-degree murder charges and additional accusations related to attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and discharging a gun from a vehicle. Last April, a jury found him guilty, cementing his substantial prison term. Meanwhile, co-defendant Tyquan Benson, 28, also from Long Beach, was likewise held accountable and received a sentence of 50 years to life, plus 17 additional years, in October. Benson, who had prior criminal convictions, including a 2014 burglary, was also convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm. During the proceedings, Superior Court Judge James D. Otto suggested that Wright's involvement, while significant, was less critical than Benson's. This distinction was noted during Wright's trial phase, highlighting the varied roles individuals played in the fatal event. Prosecutors presented a sobering picture of the night Martinez, a 36-year-old mother of three, was killed. After finishing her workday, she stopped for food at a taco truck where a shootout erupted. Deputy District Attorney Robert Song argued that Martinez was caught in crossfire as Wright and Benson exchanged gunfire with other individuals trapped in the lot situated at Magnolia Avenue and Anaheim Street. Song elaborated that while it was unclear whether Wright or Benson fired the fatal shot, either scenario supported their guilt in Martinez's death due to the reckless and violent nature of their actions. A third, unidentified shooter was also mentioned, who reportedly fired at Benson and missed, underscoring the chaotic violence of that evening. Countering, Wright's defense, led by attorney George Moyer, argued that Wright did not discharge any firearm and tried to de-escalate the conflict, emphasizing his attempts to avoid violence and simply retrieve food. Moyer painted a picture of Wright as being guilt by association due to his proximity to the more aggressive Benson. In a statement following the incident, the Long Beach Police Department indicated that the deadly outcome was the result of a gang dispute that disastrously escalated. A young female was also injured in the shoot-out but survived her injuries. Wright and Benson were arrested nearly three months post-incident, with both being held in custody since their capture. The case underscores ongoing concerns about gang violence and its devastating impact on communities, often ensnaring individuals who have no involvement in such conflicts. As the legal outcomes unfold, the broader Long Beach community continues grappling with the need for solutions to curb the cycle of violence and ensure greater public safety.
