The FBI has joined the investigation into the shooting that occurred in the early hours of June 1 in Santan, District 4 of the community. According to reports, officers responded to a disturbance at a home and were met with a large crowd and gunfire. Six people, including two officers, were shot during the incident. Joshua Briese, a 23-year-old officer, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Prior to joining the academy, Briese had served at the Arizona Department of Corrections alongside officer Terry Neill, who remembered him as a dependable officer who took pride in his job. Briese, who had been with the Gila River Police for less than a year and was still in training, came from a family with a law enforcement background. His father, David Briese, also lost his life in the line of duty while working for the Yellowstone County Sheriff's Office in 2006. Another officer remains in serious but stable condition following the shooting, while one other individual was pronounced dead, with their identity yet to be disclosed.
